Well, there's no one "best" Legend, though there are standouts and less popular choices.

The easiest way to look at Legends is either in the Store Page - all the individually named 'mechs there are Legends, and you can mouse over them if you're unsure - or else using MechDB to directly check the stats of the Legends you want.

I'd recommend going for the Deathstrike or Moonwalker, depending on what weapons you prefer. They're Clantech Battlemechs, with good architecture and weapon hardpoints - they're easy to optimize, and theres's a reason they each have only one, solitary qurik. Once you pick, use The GrimMechs Database to set them up until you're comfortable tinkering. That's actually good advice for any new 'mech. GrimMech's isn't Gospel, and not all of its builds are equally effective at all levels of play - but it's a vast resource full of solid, curated builds contributed by quite competent players. I strongly recommend it.

Maybe, to diversify, you should try a heavy or medium

Diversification is an essential practice - learning other weight classes will definitely make you a better player. Even if you end up specializing in a certain weight class, knowing how other weight classes (and types of loadout) work is essential in learning how to fight them when you run up against a skilled player.

i figure the assault mechs are the costly ones so better to get those. still have the medium/heavy/assault pick from beach event to go over ive got 14 lights / 23 mediums / 28 heavys / 32 assaults. a couples of the heavys/assaults are the different mech varients but most are unique

Great - the Annihilator is an amazing chassis, too. Despite having smaller armor quirks, the thing's architecture makes it harder to kill in a staring contest than an Atlas.

Awesomes are one of the 'mechs with poor architecture; their hit boxes are just so wide - they're often unfavorably compared to a barn. The Ghillie is a decent, but unremarkable Medium. I have one, but it's not one I play a bunch - the model is great, however. Love the camouflage. For my mileage, I got the Arrow as a very mean hillcrest fighter.

Jaegermechs and riflemen aren't 'mechs I've spent a lot of time piloting; They're some the lightest 'mechs that can support two heavy ballistics, because the lack of arm actuators allows you to mount guns in the arms that would crowd out the XL engine if they were in torso slots - the Jaegermech in particular. The Jaegermech DE can even (barely) run dual Heavy Gauss.

For the Assault, go with the Longbow. Just a newer, better chassis overall. Highlanders aren't necessarily bad, but they're an old, old chassis (predating 12v12 and Faction Warfare,) and I think they're a bit clunkier to play.
