I love using TAG. I also hate how it immediately exposes my position and suddenly I'm primaried by the entire enemy team.

My suggestion is that since TAG are essentially IR laser designators that the beam be invisible *UNLESS* youre using thermal vision that can "see" in the infrared spectrum.

this would have multiple effects:

one, TAG would no longer be a zero damage laser that immediately exposes your position and would encourage use of the system by light/medium scouts and improve the survivability of mechs in said role.

two, it would give thermal vision an actual tactical function beyond its current use which is basically a "colorblind" mode.

IMO this could add some flavor to the game and encourage use of TAG beyond the improvement to targeting time on LRM/SSRM boats and encourage use of alternate vision modes by giving them an actual, tangible function on the battlefield.

maybe add a flashing icon on the HUD (its currently a steady amber light that isnt very eye catching) when youre tagged and perhaps even an audio cue such as "TAG detected".

this suggestion both buffs the TAG system, but gives it a viable counter.

And what then would you do about the "TAG Stealth" payment bonus, which only applies when marking with TAG outside of Enemy viewing angles? This change would mean TAG loses the extra requirement of skill to not be caught with your visible laser on a target, and also may negate the part about being sneaky with TAG in general. Also, isn't it harder to mark with TAG if you take away the visible part which that TAG's user is looking for? :o

(p.s.: Are you using a Mod Pack or something? My install is plain vanilla and my TAG is red colored...)

Oh, those TAGs do quite visible! Trade away a lurmer's position from quite a distance!
I prefer ER M-lasers istead of TAGs. Their burntime 95% of times enough to get the lock and even hurt a bit. And if I am correct those ever outrange TAGs...

EDIT:
Fixed some typos...
