My recommendation is a medium mech based on one's style of paly. Mediums give a good turn of speed , adaquate armor and a reasonable weapons loadout (especially with the variants). By carefully looking at how one plays, ie. the cool sniper, the brawler. the fire support, mech selection in the medium class is the way to go. A new player will have the chance to develop skills and contribute to the lance/company without being put in one of the high pressure, skilled position. As one gains skill the individual can move into a more specialized mech and role within his/her company. Certainly there is nothing to keep a new player from choosing an assault or light mech, but these classes have limitations that may escape a rookie. Pick a role and a style of play and experiment before tying oneself down to a specific role or mech.

anyone unfamiliar with the BT universe, or with limited experience with the games should, as noted several times, start with a medium mech. most retain good, if not excellent, speed. they have decent armor and, for the most part, aren't going to die after 1 or 2 hits. and most have the ability to have a pretty solid weapons loadout. for new players, i would NOT recommend a heavy energy-based weapons loadout, for the simple reason of needing to learn to handle heat levels. in most games, you aim and fire and that's it. in MW, every weapon you fire creates waste heat. your mech has to disperse this waste heat somehow and can only disperse so much at a time. if you generate more than it can disperse, it builds up. eventually, your mech will shut down. so laser-boating isn't recommended until you fully understand heat. that's what a couple of people were saying about the Awesome and it's 3 PPCs. alpha strike with those and you're hammering the override to keep from being shut down for heat.
just pick a medium mech, like the Centurion, with a good balance of weapons, for all ranges, and play the prime a few battles. get your feet wet and see what you like best, then adapt that mech toward that goal, or get another mech that better fits that role.
i'd like to see the executioner make the game and be available, but it should probably be a specialized mech not available to starting players. it had such a specific role that it might not work well for most players. was a nasty surprise for command mechs, though.

Scouting is specialized, new players shouldn't be jumping into dedicated scout mechs unless they have a good idea about what scouting entails and that's what they want to do. Raven is, therefore, a bad choice. Worse, in my opinion, than an Atlas because the Atlas is hard as nails and deadly in a fight until/unless outnumbered or outflanked.

When starting out as a new player it's only natural that you're going to 'screw up' quite a bit while learning the game mechanics. With that in mind the following is worth considering when choosing your first mech...
Screw up as a Light mech and the long range support Mech's in your team will flame you for sucking as a scout.
Screw up as a long range support Mech and the Hvy/Assault Mech's will flame you for not providing support.
Screw up as a Heavy/Assault Mech and you will be flamed by the entire team for letting them down.
Screw up as a medium Mech.... nobody cares!
Go the Medium
