For those who will play lone wolves, as a potential Mercenary Corporation leader -dependant on what it will take to start my Merc Corps, when I know I have to begin as a House player, first- I would like to know what your motivation is for becoming a lone wolf at the outset?

Hey Kay, like we were discussing over at MechSpecs.com, a great many Lone Wolf players will suit up independent until they find a unit they mesh well with and then go through the recruitment process. In a way it is a good idea as it allows you to see them and them to see you; both parties can judge compatibility.

I believe the vast majority of players will be in a unit or with a faction. I see the Lone Wolf station as a transitional area where players can still experience the action, but also look for a unit or decide on a faction. I don't forsee a large group of Lone Wolves.

Didn't vote, considering I chose lone wolf as the superior alternative to being identified at any point with the rest of the Inner Sphere; many of us are just waiting out a year for the clan invasion. Personally been a fan of the clans since they were introduced.

I cannot relate to the lone wolves, they are feral beyond measure. Wolves hunt in packs, where there is strength, unity, power.

I know not whether they fight for money, a ghastly thrill of killing, or simply the knowledge that they have the power to destroy.

Regardless of their reasoning, I can never trust whats behind their eyes.

Lone wolf because I refuse to go through a recuritment/application process and jump through hoops to arbitrarily try and please someone. If I join a group it's because I was invited to do so and only if I like and/or respect them.

I prefer to control my own destiny in such things. Mason and Orzom make very valid points. I suspect I will move into one direction or another once I get a better feel for the way in which the interactions between all the faction flesh out. Also I hate a lot of the politics that go in faction groups.

Problem with Leadership is, that in most cases those who wish to do it most, are the least equipped to handle it. So what happens is the actual functionality of leadership ends up in the hands of someone who didn't want it.

It's impossible to be a great leader, without first being a great follower.

none of the above. I'm already part of a mechwarrior team and I would rather bring that team in MWO than have to join another team. And no, I don't want to play under a cannon House or Merc name, my team already has a name thank you.

ill stay a wolf till we know for sure how this game will be played and then we start to jell as mechwarriors.

Until then theres is no point in joining anything. Applying what you have learned makes you better at what you

do and this game will be no diffrent

None of the above also. I have already decided on a merc group I would like to join and would hope that this would be possible at game start. This is one of the basics that need to be in the "Minimum Viable Product" that they launch with. I aso think that all "noobs" to MW should start off as lone Wolves until they have an informed chance to work out whether they want to join a house or Merc Corp. At the least beginners should have a chance of a "free transfer" in the first few weeks (with all their LPs and XP's) in case they decide that they've made a mistake. With any luck the game will be popular enough that we will have a great influx of new players and it will be our job to make them welcome - off the field of battle :D. I just hope that PGI will be capable of handling things if there is a big rush as we become FOTM.

I like keeping my options open, work with whoever I want. I will be able to make friends across house and merc lines.

I tend to be a "lone wolf" player myself, and you didn't have my primary motivation: time

As in I don't have much free time that is my own. Between wonky hours at work and family, I have to take whatever free time I can get, so I can't schedule a time to play with a group of friends online anymore.

I am actually hoping to join the FRR, but for the above reasons I may too go Lone Wolf.

True, and good point; that's why I chose to begin this poll and thread.

I think I agree with you, and I would hope most folks find a place, and friends, to play with.

So Master Chief Petty Officer Modrijewski taught me when I was in Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, which is why I have the leadership style I have, sort of loose, listening to those who trust me to do the job I will do, and doing what needs to be done to get and keep the unit moving.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for the awesome answers, thus far. I have modified the poll to represent the two options that were addressed that I didn't even think of, a lack of time, and the desire to wait for the Clans. Thank you.

What I don't understand is why people are scared to join one of the factions. The factions are not player run, they are a game mechanic. You don't have to apply, you don't have to put in any more effort than you desire. You won't be given orders, you can play when and how you want. This is what you'll be doing as a "lone wolf" anyway, you'll be filling in on the faction matches when the faction players don't have enough to fill out their side.

It's also going to be interesting to see how the "I want to be able to kick around with House's and Merc Units so I can find one I like" thing works out, since as of right now, it doesn't look as if there is any way for Lone Wolves to play with Mercs.

"I love the idea of making my own MechWarrior's destiny"... I don't get this. How are you not "making your own destiny" no matter WHAT you chose to do? No one is forcing you to do anything, you have free will to pick a faction, to change your mind and join a merc unit, to change your mind and go elsewhere. You aren't locked down. You ARE limiting your playing experience by going "Lone Wolf".

Usually, when people are described as "lone wolves," it means that they are solo players: i.e. not a member of a guild/party/Mercenary Company. Since many MMOGs include group scenarios, as I assume they may be common in MWO, not being a member of a guild/party/Mercenary Company makes it harder to get a group together to play them.

Since we don't have much information yet on how the game will be played, our model for what "group play" will be like is based on past experiences in other MMOGs. Because of Real Life, I pretty much stick to solo content on other MMOGs, while keeping an eye on the chat window LFG posts: others like me who may be "Looking for Group."

There is no solo content though... it's all group PVP, 12 vs 12. You can still join matches solo, even work by yourself instead of with your team in the match, while part of a faction. You can be part of a faction and not be involved with other people in any way besides shooting them if you want.
