So, let's try to get a bit of an impression on how the people on this forum stand towards MWO. Before it actually gets released. Seen a lot of people expressing different opinions, from "Make the game the way I want it or I'll leave!" to "Doesn't matter what PGI does, it will be BattleTech, I'm committed!".

And a lot of people not stating their motivator/outlook. Or their dedication to the project. I set up a little poll here to see if we can figure out where some trends are going. Only three questions and limited number of answers though, not like I'm working for PGI in market research... :(

Feel free, please, to comment in the thread especially if you picked the "Other than above" choices. ^_^

Only two things will make me not wish to play or quit the game. It becomes P2W. That is something the devs have committed to not doing, so no problems. The game just outright sucks. I have confidence it wont. Brining the meta game into the core of the experience will help keep MWO current and growing. Planetary Leagues like NBT added this meta game in previous version of MechWarrior. I played MW4 solid for over half a decade thanks to the expanded experience NBT provided which was just plain missing from the standalone game. The main attraction factor to MWO is a persistent, competitive gaming experience with a deep meta game.

My primary concern with this game is similar to my feelings for Star Trek Online. It had such huge potential, It could have been an incredibly immersive experience. Yet the devs just churned out another 2 dimensional WoW clone in space.

Now I know this is not intending to be a MMO RPG ... so this will not be a WoW clone ... but a mmorpg has more options open to it than a FPS does with regard to immersion.

So my main concern is will it be 'DEEP' enough.

Will it feel like I am progressing and developing without the grind.

A little explanation here about what I feel to be 'GRIND' This is when you play the game to move through the content. But with one key factor. As you progress you leave behind other content which becomes obsolete. Ala Star Trek Online ... a Tier 1 Starship can not realistically harm a tier 6 Starship. So you end up playing though the tier 1 light cruiser with the sole purpose of leaving the tier 1 light cruiser. = GRIND.

I hope that through the role warfare, character development, and the matchmaking system they implement that Stinger you bought on day one of your scout career can be retrofitted and still win fights through sub-diffuse.

Otherwise this will just turn onto a WoT clone ..which is fun for a while but ultimately feels like a waste of time ... my free time is starting to have toooo many demands on it to waste any ... even if it is fun.

From a Dev point of view why should they care ... WoT has something like 6 mil+ players. Great! but how many are paying for the game? I know I don't.

Currently (1 year into WoT) i only play the game really cos i need to clear my stars ... (double exp for the first win of the day per tank.) But the game is does not make me want to spend money on it.

http://penny-arcade....the-skinner-box

Have a look at this to see what I mean.

Give me a game that really engages me! Do this and I will probably NEVER leave!

I think PGI are making the right noises about this game to be honest. And the F2P model will allow them to be very flexible. Through closed and open Beta there will be a big opportunity to refine the game into a real winner. My biggest fear is we get a game too much like CoD, trying to appease that mass market. PGI seems aware of this though, again, they are making the right noises. Russ and Bryans recent podcast gives a big insight into this I feel.

The other big vib I always get from the MechWarrior community is a split down the middle between pure sim/roleplay and hardcore competitive players. This is something PGI needs to balance, building a game which can be casual yet meaningful while also being very competitive for hardcore / meta gamers.

Essencially, what Woodstock said - A game that is interesting, instead of just a "fight fight fight get bigger mech fight fight fight, repeat ad nauseaum"

Insteresting, immersive (i want to "feel" i am in BT 3050), and fun.

I am a little more flexible on the P2W, as I understand it: For me, it will be acceptable if some new guy comes in, and buys for $$$ the exact same stuff I have (and i have not necessarely bought). Piranha needs to turn in a buck..

My largest fear will be the Pay-2-Win part, which I'm not really concerned wuth due to the developers' prior comments. Also according to developer comments, I do not expect MWO to be a grind for the latest and greatest. What I see the developers talking about and creating is a situation where that scout mech you bought on day one will be very useful for its designed role.

Bit of a misconception there, WoT prolly has 6M accounts, active ones tho...? As you never lose an account, even if you played just a single match... Currently, just before server DT today, we had a whooping 7K players and change on the NA server (which is the one that covers the whole pacific/oceanic area as well). Dunno if you want to call that successful really. :(

And if you take a look at their forums, you see posts that clearly indicate how well, or rather not, many players feel about that game's development&direction. Let me give you a link for an example: Players leaving (I actually logged in and posted again there, you made me do it!!! ^_^ )

I keep saying it, WoT is a good example on what you can do really wrong with a good concept IMHO.

Honestly id have to say my main concern is i dont want this game to be easy. Im not a game gennie kind of

person. Games im spending time playing need to have a challenge, after playing the oringinal EverQuest for

about ten years and dealing with the grind of making my wizard and ShadowKnight and getting in a Good

Guild iv'e come to realize, that if thier is a challenge to what you are doing thier will be a better commitment

from all the people your playing with.Theres nothing more irratating then learnig how to play a game and then

having a bunch of cry baby poeple join you who have no idea of what is going on in the game and how to play

it.Plus i do want some solo content. Thier will always be a time constrant on real life commitments,so variaty

and depth will be a must, this is were the grind can come in handy,to make your skills better,to practice your

gameplay, to learn how to stay alive longer, and most importantly, IF THERE IS NO ONE ON TO PLAY WITH

I got into interesting community, I got to know devs a lot closely than in other games, I like games not being too easy and enjoy challenge. With that in mind, I don't think there will be much I could think of that would force me leave. Maybe I will change game once in a while, but I'm sure it won't be the last time you saw me. ^_^

There are only two things to get me out of the game!
You really have to pay to get a chance. I would pay for certain things I really want to have, but not for just basic playing. No shots with a laser, because you didn't pay some $ etc.
Furthermore, things which upset me in other games like X-Blaster (it was crappy, but I played it for a long time...). Pay 20$ and receive a force-field or the death-ray-of-doom 60 damage in one location, beside that it would be unfair, it doesn'T belong to any BT-universe game.

Mega dittos!

This game will have to be REAL garbage for me not to stick around. I am guessing, based off of Bryan Ekman's comments, that we will see some footage this month.

I can't wait to play it as we have been waiting for years for a good mechwarrior game that utilises modern technology, the only thing that would turn me off it is if it turns into another watered down shooter or if there are serious imballances all of which i'm pretty sure wont happen judging by what i have read and heard so far.

The first question also needs an "I will have to wait and see" or "other than above" option. There is no way that I can, without even a beta demo, to make the judgement call of how long will I play MWO. It is like asking the GOP constituency who they are going to vote for today, on 2 January 2012 with 10 months left to go until the general election.

Frankly, if there is no way for a planetary league to form around the game, I will only play the game infrequently - ladder leagues and pubbers bore me after a while. If there is, however, a "purchase a download/DVD game" option that permits the formation/creation of a planetary league (like that which grew around MW3/4/Mercs), then I am in for the long haul.

I will stick around aslong as it doesn't become P2W and theres room for someone who is both hardcore competitive and a simulationist (yes I want my cake and eat it to but don't we all?)

As a 26 year veteran of the franchise, I voted "for the duration" of course. Now if this game is total crap thats one thing, but you would really have to go outta your way to ruin a MW game. But as it is, I plan on all my free time being put into this game until Christ comes back ! Goodbye friends and relatives, it was nice knowwing ya !
