I'm still not sure where to stand on the AC/2 situation. Unless they come in quads like on the Mauler; where is the damage potential, besides extreme nickel and dime snipering?
Then again, would you even notice you were getting nickel and dimed till your armor changes color?

They make me feel inadequate and ill prepared to defend myself, my family, my mech and the rest of my property.

They make me ticklish.

But maybe that's cuz I'm a Lyran and I ride in Assault mechs?

I did equip a few Hussars with 330 xl engines for a top speed of 180 kph, and mounted ac-2s w/ 90 rounds. Their purpose was to harrass and draw off enemy units, to be ambushed by other mechs like ultra AC20 equipped Hunchbacks. Very effective used in this manner.

They would have to be in a group of 3 or 4 for them to be effective. Otherwise you'd just be annoying the enemy as opposed to doing any great amount of damage to them.

I remember in the first Mechwarrior PC game, you could aim quite well. As in blow off a Battlemaster's head from long range with AC 2's on a Rilfeman. Heh. But without that type of aiming they are sad sack long range machine guns. So how do they make me feel? Sad on the inside where no one can see.

AC/2s and AC/5s weigh too much for too little damage potential and have been since tabletop. `Mechs that rely on these as their main guns are absolutely horrible at their jobs without special rules (like those standard in BT's Total Warfare core rulebook) to make them better at anti-aircraft duty. At which point they become "okay."

FASA knew next to nothing about real weapon balance in the 80's and the absolute terribleness of any Autocannon not an AC/20 or an AC/10 fitted with Precision Ammo (not a Mechwarrior thing, but it's great on tabletop) is the worst symptom of that lack of balancing experience. The second worst symptom? How good Medium Lasers are for their weight and heat.

How badly broken Clantech was only proves that FASA still didn't know anything about weapon balance well into the 90's. Only recently have CGL been taking weapon balancing as seriously as they should have been from the start.

I'd rather use a straight razor during the zombie apocalypse than an AC/2.

Lol...QFT

I really wish they would double the ROF on all light ACs.

I tend to agree with TG Xarbala. When I was playing tabletop any mech using AC/5s was frowned upon and using AC/2s was laughed at. Even using an AC/10 you are tempted to swap out for a PPC and 5 or 6 heat sinks.

They're harassment weapons really, aren't they? In terms of actual damage output they're pretty underwhelming but they're an ideal armament for skirmishers.

I tend to use an AC 10 as a secondary weapon along side ER PPC's when im over heating.

AC 5 and 2 dont even get looked at to be honest.

Can't say that I care for them really.
Lowest calibre I'd use would is AC 5, and then I'd prefer the Ultra version.

As an harrasment weapon I'd still opt for AC5 if I can.

To hell with the "canon", or the precedence of tabletop lore, or whatever.

Up the fire rate until the DPS of each Auto Cannon is only slightly less than that of the next biggest Auto Cannon, with the disadvantage being that not all shots will necessarily hit.

Problem solved. Everyone go home.
