Well, this might not be the best website to post this, but you guys convinced me to buy AMD instead of Nvidia, like my dad suggested. :P Anyway, here's the story: starting within the past few months, with it happening infrequently before and increasing in occurances since then, my GPU fan has been making some noises that I'm pretty sure it's not suoopsed to make. Just today, I was playing a certain game that taxed my ATI Radeon HD 6850 pretty well (~70% load, according to the monitering program I'm using) and after starting, its fan started to make this really rough sound. I've played this game before, and while the fan does go faster, its usually just a steady whine. Now, it sounds like you put a baseball card in your tire spokes to make it sound like a motorcycle. :D After I closed the game, the sound continued for three minutes or so, even though I had 0% load and 13% fan speed. I don't think its supposed to make this sound, but I'm not familliar with (realitivly) powerful systems like mine. So, what is this sound, what causes it, how can I fix it, and can the GPU live with it? (I can live with it; it's the GPU I'm worried about :D )

It's not supposed to make that sound. Something has gotten caught, or one of the fan blades has gotten loose, or the fan has become unbalanced. In my case, the fan made noises like that because one of the other cables inside the computer was leaning against the spinning blades. A quick adjustment and it stopped making that noise. What you have might be more difficult to fix, or it might not. In either case, the fan is no longer providing adequate airflow to the heatsink of the GPU. It needs fixing, but that will need to be a manufacturer fix.

Or it might not, if it is a case wire that is poking into it. Otherwise yes, it may need to be RMA'd.

Are you sure it's the videocard?
I had a fan noise problem which I suspected my videocard to be the cause.
Turned out it was my powersupply instead (not enough overhead)

hey ranger u should tighten down all the bolts to ur fan because they might be loose from the vibrations and if that dosent work u should get the barings checked out and makes sure all ur power cords are not near it preferably zip tie XD

I had a similar problem with my Nvidia card. I let my tower sides opened put some load on graphic card and saw what happens. Sound occured and i realized that it was made by loose plastic protection foil which i should remove from card before inserting into PC. I removed the foil and sound never occured again. :)
