What kind of HUD user interface would you prefer?

  1. Obstructed. Pulling a HUD up on the main display (i.e. the battlegrid) completely obstructs your cockpit view. (1 votes [2.94%] - View)

    Percentage of vote: 2.94%

  2. Transparent. Pulling a HUD up on the main display gives a large transparent overlay, through which the normal cockpit view can be seen. (14 votes [41.18%] - View)

  3. Physical. The HUDs are presented in the cockpit view, and can be seen at all times. They don't expand or fill the screen. (17 votes [50.00%] - View)

  4. Other. Please explain below! (2 votes [5.88%] - View)

Looking at the Q&A for information warfare, I'm trying to imagine how the HUD interface could/should be set up.

I'd prefer to have all the different HUDs visible as physical elements of your main cockpit i.e. the battlegrid, targeting information, comms, etc are all visible as part of my cockpit from the normal 1st person view. At my discretion, any one element of the HUD system can be expanded to fill my vision through the neurohelmet.

I'm torn on whether this should totally obstruct my view and leave me distracted/vulnerable or if it could be a transparent overlay that still allows me to pilot the mech and be at least partially aware of my surroundings.

In either case, I really want a dynamic, realistic-feeling cockpit. I like that we're locked to a first-person view, and being able to see the HUD as physical pieces of that cockpit would be fantastic.

The option to choose which one you prefer should be in settings. You know, it is good for realism, but some people do not know all those screens and prefer it to have on the place they are used to see it in most games.

P.S. Shouldn't this be in the suggestions forum? ^_^

I would def. suggest a mod moves this to suggestions thread in forums, especially if this leads to the community coming up with cool ideas for the Devs...

However, I prefer a hud with options. I would like to have everything for the hud in front of me like poll options number 3 but still have the options to bring up different overlays, etc...

Given US airforce pilots had a transparent HUD overlay in their helmets in the 20th century, shouldn't we have such a thing? I mean, we're thirty-first century mech pilots driving the most advanced war technology ever developed.

Besides, I like Transparent HUD as you can always see readouts.

It makes somewhat sense to have the HUD transparent, it effectively occluding the view from the cockpit would make having a cockpit with windows/viewports somewhat redundant. But... I also like the option to have multiple smaller screens in my cockpit consoles where I can delegate at least part of the info to. eventually so much that I can disable the HUD completely at times.

A certain amount of zoom capability for the HUD might be unavoidable. We are talking about players here with loads of different computer setups and possibly playing the game in a variety of different resolutions. Just think about what happens if you make a completely static HUD and you have players with both widescreen and normal-sized monitors. And respective resolutions/scaling? It probably won't have to be a free zoom, 3 or 4 fixed settings might do.

Another point worth considering is the coloring matter. There are quite a lot of people out there who do have - in varying degrees - issues with "red/green color blindness" For catering to those it might be useful if PGI plans for at least one extra color scheme/setup that negates issues with that. If you do it before launch, should be easier doable than afterwards. ^_^

When you say HUD I think of an actual Heads Up Display, meaning it is a display that is laid over a physical cockpit through means that are electronic and it feeds you things such as mech damage read out, battle grid, weapon settings and what not. This type of stuff had traditionally been physical on a mech and not part of the neurohelmet display nor part of the cockpit faceplate.

what I would like to see is a full cockpit, like they had in the 2009 video. I want to see my readouts on a console in my cockpit. As with their scope of making you feel like the mechwarrior in the cockpit, I think this is not much to ask for.

So to answer the OP, I clicked other and physical, I want no HUD at all, I want consoles as part of my cockpit.
