Often forgotten, actually. 1812 is hilarious (loss of life excepted, obviously) and the final settlement amounted to "Everyone back to the start line, now pretend nothing happened (well, except for that fire thing with the white place, whatever it was called...)." :-)

They did stop pressing our sailors though, so that was a positive.

That was just the excuse, really and in many cases the so-called "US sailors" were exactly what the British claimed; British subjects who lied about their names and claimed US citizenship (but didn't have it) in order to avoid British jurisdiction, often for crimes they were likely to hang over. USA was looking for an excuse to flex its 'muscle' and the public was clamouring for action because it made the USA look impotent.
