It depends. If you are speaking generally (including the full timeline), then the Ultra AC/20. Why? Because!

Pre-Clan Invasion favorite goes to the AC/20. Sure you have limited ammo and range, but there's something so very satisfying about firing that bfg.

However, from a pure tactical standpoint the standard AC/10 has to be a first choice, combining good range, high damage, low heat, and enough ammo to last a long fight to make it a great weapon.

While generally I love me some MRMs combined with an AC/10 or two and/or gauss rifle, I do tend to mix up my weapon choices based on the 'Mech I am to be piloting.
That said, I can't deny that the one weapon that goes on every build I make is the medium laser (ER when available, and usually more than one). Always in the torso. It's just comforting to know that no matter if my arms are blown off, and my missle pods hopefully emptied of ammo then ripped off, that I will still have a good dagger to stab at my enemies with so long as I'm in the fight.

Right. Have you ever seen what happens when a Jenner gets hit by an AC/10 in the torso and gets a critical against it's ammo in the first round of the game? Its a spectacular explosion. There's something to be said for a weapon that doesn't need ammo.

With the weapons we will have choose from being 3049 Inner Sphere, I'm more of an infighter, but sadly last I heard there would be no melee combat in the game so Triple Strength Myomar and a hatchet is out.

I like to have some long range weaponry, that still works well at short range, so for that role I prefer a Ultra AC/5 or two if I am in a larger mech, the ultra 5's minimum ragne is better then any of the LRM's with about the same max range, and keeping in mind this is Inner Sphere tech 3049, we don't have CASE people, ammo explosions are going to SUCK!!!! Because of that, if they do ammo explosions right, I'm going to want as few ammo loaded weapons as possible, and machine guns are right out, not enough, damage too little range, and 400 points of damage on a ammo explosion (according to tabletop numbers) per ton of ammo.

So I might have a LRM system, but will probably go with a Ultra5 or two and load the rest of my weapon space with lasers, pulse if I can manage the heat, PPC's in 3049 you are talking a good bit of heat buildup, and with single heat sinks ouch.

It very much depends on how they do the game. I love AC's and LRM's. If we can't fit CASE easily then I'll go the energy route for short range ie Swayback. Catapult for fire support. Centurion or Hunchback if we can fit CASE.

I prefer beam weapons (ER Large Lasers, PPCs, etc.) and the mechs (i.e. Assault) that have the space/heat sinks to loadout several beams weapons at once. Nothing says "I love you" like six ER Large Lasers firing at the target simultaneously. :)

lots of heat management needed there, even with the extra heat sinks

I like to ppc's and lrm's. I'm hopeing MWO will have streak lrm's like some of the books. For closer ranges I like ERmedium lasers. They do good damage and have decent range. Also they are realy usefull against vehicles and BA

Hmmmm. I'm sensing a theme here.....everyone likes PPCs.

The ER PPC is effectively a massive range sniper-rifle with unlimited ammunition, i.e. the most powerful weapon you can fit on a 'Mech.

With that in mind, I wonder if the developers think that the urban focused combat areas will reduce the effectiveness of this weapon, or if they plan on either reducing it's power or making other weapons, such as the Gauss Rifle, considerably more effective.

Have to say, I nearly always include Medium Lasers, ER if clan is available.
If possible, I also include at least one Large Laser, for range purposes without the whole ammo explosion problem.
On heavier mechs, I include Gauss Rifles and PPCs.

If they model the PPC according to the BT rules, then it's effectiveness in close combat will be something to desire, reduction in accuracy and damage by atleast 50% when hitting targets within 90m.

The Medium Laser is by far one of the best weapons in the game. Good weight/damage/heat ratios and you'd be hard pressed to find a published or custom design that isn't loaded out with at least one of these bad boys. The standard medium laser even survives the test of time, still being useful even in post 3050 era where ER and pulse models start becoming available.

With that being said, the bigger weapons are a toss up but I do find myself making use of the LB10-X Autocannon quite often in my designs. Lighter than a standard AC/10 and packing two tons of ammo (one for solid slug and the other for cluster) you have an AC and LRM10 packed in one weapon.

I'm partial to the Light AC5 and Thunderbolt missiles. Alas, I will be waiting many a year for them to show up.

I like my various gauss rifles, light gauss for sniping, clan gauss for the heavy hitter.
Cyclops with 3 light gauss and an er ppc on the side
Annihilator with 4 clan gauss....BOOM!
