I frequently thank my lucky star that I own the vast majority of the novels. I discovered the Dark Age books a little late so that is very incomplete, also because I was not familiar with the Jihad and the WoB madness, the founding of the Republic of the Sphere and the destruction of Wolf's Dragoons and a good portion of the classic Merc Companies, I was lost for a bit.
I have since read up on the history via SARNA up to the 'end', so to speak. I would just go and buy the various Sourcebooks but I don't play TT and to spend that kind of cash just to read the fluff seems ill-advised. Besides it's nice to see it fleshed out in a novel instead of a, sometimes dry tech Sourcebook.
So I guess that is my question: Is the only way to learn about the Jihad and everything else history wise only in the Sourcebooks?

To the best of my knoweldge, and I also own all of the novels upto the Darkage (including some) there are no novels that are set between the end of the FED/COMM civil war and the start of the Darkage era. Source books and Sarna are probably your only hope. Do some searching on the net, I managed to download some of the source books as PDF's for free.

From what I know Loren Coleman wrote a series called Shadows of Faith that takes place at the beginning of the Jihad. I think is was a EPub series.
