If you can't wait to get into some mechwarrior goodness: Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is free to download and play. It's a bit dated, but its a good introduction to some core gameplay concepts of the mechwarrior franchise.

When you have some free time, its a good place to look through the mechs (and their terrible pictures) and the history of the great houses of the innersphere, if you're interested at all in the world the game takes place in.

Well, we can't all be perfect.

But in all seriousness, I hope this game turns out well and gives you a good impression of the franchise. If you want a good taste, I think the board has already agreed that the Mechwarrior 2 series for PC was the best play experience for us, though it's getting close to 20 years old, now. Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries, however, is still a pretty fun game and is free to download - complete with mods and fan mech-packs boosting the number of units to chose from significantly. The only downside to MW4 is that, outside of story, it had very little in common with the stats of the original tabletop game, forsaking it's roots in favor of catering to the casual gamer in a way that felt like being talked down to, but what more could you expect from Microsoft's marketing team?
On the flip side, if you're the type that might want to take a stab at the tabletop game, swing by the section on the forums and shoot the breeze, I'm sure someone could help you out with either running you through some games of Megamek (A Java recreation of the tabletop game), or where to get the materials to get started on the real thing.

Got a few bucks kicking around? A decent machine? Go try MechWarrior Living Legends, it is a mod for Crysis Wars, which is a MP part of Crysis Warhead. It is fairly cheap to get online at a digital download spot, like steam or such. Goes on sale quite a bit and it is fan-freaking-tastic!
Mechlivinglegends.net Worth to look at it. If anything gives you something to tide you over until this Summer

Well, you can try Mechwarrior 2: Mercs. It is harder to find to download, but if you do, just run it in DosBox and you will have a lot of fun. Centurion was not in the MW 4: Mercenaries, either.

Sure can, I am very much a brawler. Hell just last night I was playing MWLL. When I am in a public game, I am there for pure fun, I ended the match with the most kills AND the most deaths. I just enjoy running in to the thick of things blasting away with autocannons, large lasers, srms and PPCs.. Also did not help that I went and played as Battle Armor and a weak aerospace fighter (think space plane), and those added up to my death count.
I just find it damn boring sitting 800m out tossing PPC and Gauss rounds back and forth. Not to say I do not, or cannot snipe. I just find messing some surat scum up is damned fun (surat is sort of flying monkey on a alien world, populated with a group that call themselves The Clans, it will all make sense soon enough)
