I was looking through the media section earlier today and I saw that there where many different and all good looking variants of possible armors and cockpits in the concept art. My favourite part of any game is customization, so right away I thought about being able to customize a mech's armor (e.g. choose from different kinds of head designs for an atlas, different shoulder plates for a hunchback, etc.) in order to have a more deeply personalized and unique mech. Changing weapon loadouts and paint jobs are already great in terms of customization, but a mech would be truly one of a kind with the proper armour and cockpit visual modifications

Those won't necessarilly all be in the game. Typically in game development, you have a concept artist sketch numerous designs till your art leads and sometimes project leads) pick ONE. The 3d models that are actually in the game are then built to this concept.

While I may be wrong in this case, this is by far the most common path taken as content is made for a game.

PS, welcome to the forums.

The only example that I can come up with to better explain my idea is by relating to (unfortunately) halo 3, where you could choose certain armor add-ons to make your character more unique. You would'nt need too many different models for the same mech, just some small add-ons to change the looks here or there. Programming-wise it should be similar to changing the visual based on weaponry (ppc module looks different from an AC 10 module) except instead of guns we do cockpits/shoulder pieces/etc (atlas head 1 looks different from atlas head 2). This could also lead way to a part unlock/level up function, e.g. Pilot Bob reaches level 5 and unlocks custom mech part "insert part here"

Customization to a 'Mech just for looks isn't something that's been a part of the universe at all.

Changing the look of a 'Mech by changing weapons is the only thing that should be allowed. We don't need different heads for each 'Mech just for visuals.

You won't be able to see your 'Mech anyway, as the game is first-person only.

i don't think changing the mech in such a physical way is needed. various paint jobs and details like that will be more than enough the identify your mech...without the Devs spending time on a mechanic that involves a lot of work for such a superficial outcome.

Also interms of IDing mechs with the mark one eyeball....there needs to be a certain level of commonality maintained so that an atlas will always look like an atlas...

Which is a shame, as I do think it would be cool.

Yeah - at heart this game is supposed to be a military game, where these mechs are part of military units. They wouldn't allow too too much customization - as in real life. A slogan or two maybe, perhaps a tiger mouth or something - but i know im going to cringe when no one on my drop has even a remotely similar paint scheme and IFF is going to be my best friend. Adding armor customizations - while cool would make it more like a gladiatorial game than a war game. Now on Solaris VII......

What? No T-95 turret on my M1A2? why... why... that's not faaaiiir!

OP: These are not some import one modifies with spoiler packages, 26" rims, etc. These are military machines. The best one can do is have the Tech weld some tin sheet metal on it to give it "teeth" and the like. As the devs are going to have their hands full with game balance, etc, could only see something lke this happening months after release, if ever. "Never" gets my vote.

Mostly true...as long as you stick to the unit colors, insignia, and your numbers you could go crazy with a tank deployed in the field. Most customization tank crews do though is to increase survivability through better camo. When I was in the service I saw a whole lot of dozer blades with mouths painted on them. ;)

Haha I bet- that type of stuff I can understand and even appreciate - making a 80 ton war machine your own would be fun and add some flair to the game. Making it hot pink with a tail and spikes for shoulder pads with a wizards hat I do not approve of haha.

I could imagine different visual parts only if the devs add a solaris arena style mode to the game. I'm pretty sure most other parts of customization like paint scheme and decals will be fairly free rain.

Aight, thanks for the opinions guys, I never really understood how much work this idea would require, and I can clearly see that this is way too greedy a task to get done when there is much more important stuff to get to. Might be worth considering in the far future, but as for right now, we can only wait for the real deal to come off the line.

damn! would i be happy if they went to this extent with customisation
hell even if you are required to purchase the parts or such i dont care id do it

but sadly , very bad is 100% correct this is the most common way of development
so while it is unlikely they will let us change our heads and such, there is a slim chance
