Good flight sims (LOMAC, Falcon 4, and others) have this: while tracking an enemy in a dogfight (either manually or automatically) you can hit the 'forward view' button to very quickly swing the pilots head round to face the direction of travel.
The view stays forward until the button is released, and the view then quickly swings back to either the previous view or the current location of an automatically tracked enemy.

This post is unrelated to auto tracking enemies (I don't want that), I'm only suggesting the 'forward view' button (pilot's head, not mech torso).

While being less essential than in a flight sim (misjudging position/direction won't result in instant death) it would still be extremely useful in controlling a mech via a desk and a single screen.

And would be exceedingly helpful in a crowded environment such as a city - crashing into a building could well damge your mech.

Mhm, you could always assign the "movement direction view" to a subscreen. As we might actually see some part of the Mech control console in game, should be doable to place two or more subscreens there. It would basically be a camera that in alignement with yothe direction your legs are pointing at shows where you are going. Would also be somewhat more realistic than a function that lets you look elsewhere why you still keep perfectly tracking/locking the enemy. Possibly somewhere as far as 90°+ off.

With a "movemenet direction" subscreen/miniscreen you'd have basically the same functionality as with a "rearview mirror subscreen" that you'd need to fire your rear-mounted weapons. Well, minus the crosshairs.

Yeah, also good,

The tracking/lock was just part of the example from flight sims, not part of my suggestion. Basically I'm talking about the pilot quickly and temporarily turning his head to the direction of travel, independent of the current torso direction.

I must be missing something here. In MW2-3-4 if you torso twisted 90, then the Left and/or Right cockpit view buttons became your direction of travel view by default until you aligned them again.

I would be very surprised if MWO did not use the same thing.

If not, then I would Suggest that they make/assign the Align Torso to Legs button as the SPACE BAR please. ;)

I don't mean moving the torso, just the pilot's head.

Yes, this is a great work around...

For people that don't have TrackIR or Freetrack.

but the mechanic should defiantely be there. If you fly flight sims, get a headtracker bro! Totally different game.

In MW4 I used the hat-switch on the joystick to see different views... especially the down view for a dfa,
