Hi Everyone,

I am finding it difficult to get a straight and clear answer.
The FAQ's appear as though no one is updating them.

My assumptions based upon the adverstising of Mechwarrior Online:
1. This is a premium free to play game.
2. It was and still is in closed Beta, which is Pay to Play.
3. I still can not play for free.

Can someone please tell me when I can download Mechwarrior and play for free???

Or is this game just another marketing scam so they can pull in as much money as possible based upon lies.

Don't get me wrong, pay to play is ok as long as the seller is completely truthful about this and not using scams lies and manipulation to suck money from the public.

So, once again when I can I download this game and play for free?

Kind Regards,

R-T

You will be able to play for free when the game reaches open beta, which has no fixed date but is supposedly sometime at the end of Summer.

And this isn't a "marketing scam based on lies" it was a way for the MW/BT community to support a project we've all been waiting for for far too long.

It's pretty simple; Open Beta has not been given a date.

sorry mate

seriously spoken:
you already said it yourself..the game is in closed beta, so no open access to it right now... founders got the benefit to get guaranteed access to the BETA TEST...and thats it...

people who just want to play the game for free would be entirely wrong in the game at this state of development, you wouldn´t be of any help to make this game evolve... we are supposed to TEST it, to find bugs, glitches, and what else doesnt run smooth in this BETA build, which is really a BETA build and not an excuse for an unfinished release...

you will be able to PLAY it when ever PGI says MWO is ready for it...right now its time to TEST...

You say yourself that you assume this is how things are, but your assumptions are far off the mark.
You should never assume anything, instead find the facts and make an informed decision.

I think you have misunderstood quite a bit here

Once this game goes live/is released, you can download and play the game completely free, I dont see how that is so hard to understand.
You dont have to buy anything ever, and still have full access to everything ingame.
There are people in Beta now that never paid anything to get in our bought a founders pack.

The founders packs are not a paid beta key, that is a common misconception.
I know what it looks like to you and understand what you are saying, far better than you may think
The Closed beta started before the Founders packs were even announced, much less put up for sale.
At this point they invited a few thousand people who had signed up for the beta, and they never paid anything for that.
A number of these players are still in Beta and never bought the founders pack either.

The founders packs were created, I think by popular demand by players, to help finance this game.
When the founders packs were put up for sale, there was no beta key in the package, you got everything you get now except for the beta key. I dont think it was the intention to offer them beta originally either

The devs later decided to give the founders beta access probably as an extra bonus to those who has been willing to pay money up front for an unfinished and more or less unseen product.
And the goal was to have all founders in CLOSED BETA by 7th August, which the achieved about a week earlier than estimated.

The beta key you see now is an extra bonus given to those who has been willing to offer money to support the development of the game, in addition to all the other ingame goodies you get.
The founders pack sale was originally supposed to end 7th august, yet again due to popular demand has been extended, which is why it now can look like they are selling beta keys.
And in case you are wondering I have seen countless other games do this as well, most recent one was Guild Wars 2.

The founders packs does not only offer Beta access, but a number of other things as well depending on how much people are willing to pay.
Those who do not wish to buy the founders packs, can get this game completely free once the game is released for everyone, and you can download and play this game without having to pay a single dime ever and still have full access to everything ingame just like anyone who has paid real money, either up front or during gameplay.

Also saying that you dont get access to beta without paying is again an erroneous statement.
You dont get access to CLOSED BETA but once the game goes into OPEN BETA you can get access without paying a penny and it will still be beta.

It may look like its Pay to Play Beta, but its not.
Its a bonus that was added long after Beta started and founders packs put up for sale.

If you take some time to look around you will see that all the information is available on the forums here.

we forgot to mention that there are alot of ppl in the CBT now that didn´t purchase a pack... the founders beta invites were additional to the random invites many weeks going on before that...if some ppl came here too late to get this chance (which was about 0,2% if i´m right) sad for them... maybe PGI will give away some more keys before OBT, and there are key giveaways by third party websites as well... so no...not only paying ppl get into the CBT...

Oh please, as if the Founders' Pack is anything BUT a beta key. That's certainly the only reason I would ever pay for one. ****** me off that I can't test this game before I spend money, but of course that is their specific intent from this Beta, to get money rather than test for bugs. If you're willing to just blow your money on something that may or may not be great that's fine but I for one will not toss money in the trash just to take a test drive.

If you dont want to pay thats you choice, but as I said it my post above its not a paid beta.
If you read all of it I have actually explained in my post above why its not what you think it is.

There are people in beta now that has never bought the founders pack, and the did not pay for their beta key either.

When they are ready for Open Beta they will let you know. If you are signed up for Newsletters with your account you should get an Email. Alternatively you could just check the front page every now and then.

Edited my post above.
Added information that explains that there are players in beta now that never paid to get in.

I can understand your frustration, waiting sooo long and you hear nothing of an open beta date..
Not even a signal that it's comming closer!

But be patient, as we all are!

(if u played free to play games before, u normally would know they have different testing stages.. altough some DEV's will say we're comming closer to an open beta date or smthing. so that they could give more info on there home page i can agree, but on the other stuff.. Like it's a lie,.. i mean come on u serious?)

OBT is summer 2012, so date is 21.9 unless PGI says otherwise.
Tracking down other upcoming F2P MMOs, devs better rush.

Ridiculous. And yes, you CAN absolutely play this game before you ever spend money on it, because IT'S A FREE TO PLAY GAME. It won't cost anyone ANY money to play unless they chose to buy premium account time, once the game is actually released.

You know what other game you can't play right now? Call of Duty 8. Do you know why? Because it isn't released yet, just like this game.

Your complaint is that you can't test a game that hasn't been released yet before spending money on it, and it's a FREE game. This is quite possibly the most ridiculous complaint I have seen in at least 15 minutes (well, I have been reading to forums for a while today, and there are some ridiculous things on the forums).

why would they rush? if you really want to play this game, you will play it when it's available to you to play. if you aren't that invested in the franchise, that you don't care if you get to play it ever or not, you aren't the target audience, anyway. they want the game to be great, not just good or average, let alone mediocre. rushing it would make it less good than it can be. CBT will end when they are confident that the major issues have been identified and fixed and when the starting mechs they want in the game are modeled and working correctly. open beta is a 95% ready for release product. at that point, it's mostly cosmetic fixes and minor issues with collision detection, clipping, etc. then we're making sure the servers can handle the load and the network is sufficient for the number of simultaneous connections it will see normally, throughout a day.

honestly, the number of people having a fit over the beta keys included with the Founders packs really don't understand how beta tests work, today. go to your local Best Buy or computer software store and look at about 5 to 10 titles, at any given time, which have beta key offers for upcoming games, included. and at least half of those have keys offered for completely unrelated games, so it's not like CoD:4 MW having a key for CoD:MW2. "paid" betas are out there with every publisher. this one just happened to roll it in with game gear at release. so you aren't buying something you really don't want, to begin with.

geez people who doesnt know what is a closed beta surely thinks that we founders are just paying to play....

pretty muchs the founders right know are reporting things like "there is a moonwalking michael jackson on the middle of the map, dafu?", or "i got shoot by an AC/20 and i got rocketed to the nearest moon meanwhile i was using jumpjets"

(and im just exagerating but that is our "job" in there)

pay to play posts are old, people should read the faqs on the forums and arround

Did he just say scam?!?!
If this was some scam i tell you...they wouldnt live to see another day. Many of us have been waiting years for this game another month or less is nothing compared to that. The game was initially supposed to be released by the end of summer, it might go over a bit but wait until them, and please search properly next time..

I dont think the problem here is reading.
I think the problem is reading comprehension, as in some people do not understand what has been posted and just see what they want to see.

look sunshine... i decided to buy my founders pack long before it was even mentioned that ALL founders will get access to the cbt...i only knew i´ll get a mech and some nice things AFTER LAUNCH, thats it... and i based my decission on the will to fund the production of a game i wanna see become true... but in one thing you are right...selling something mostly has the intention to earn money...otherwise it would be strange, huh?

if you are very lucky you can test the game w/o buying one...but...you and some others seem to confuse 2 things... the beta is about testing the game for bugs and what not, not to TRY if it fits your taste... but i´ll give up on you, because the way you write you won´t be open for a good reasoning anyway... believe what you want. i made my decission to fund PGI´s efforts the day they announced the founders program, with barely any information what i will get in return... when i saw what i get, i was even happier with my decission, and i still don´t regret it...

buy it or don´t, that easy ....
