Treason: is it within reason

Furthermore should it be allowed?
Personal opinion is yes..would make more realistic on the human side by adding layers to the interaction between players...it would also lead to ways for smaller factions to compete with larger factions...maybe helping to balance things out....

If they were able to create some sort of system to avoid those things, then sure. But if that were the case, it would probably negate most of the reasons to do so.

Command and Control whether it be by Command mech or Group management could/would/should limit comm traffic and limit access to Mission data as "need to know". True command mechs had the ability to override comm traffic, and some major advancements led to power down of mechs command - coming from a command & Control system.
Either way, it is very realistic, and Should make you stop and think about who you hire, and your loyalties......

How is that realistic compared to real world combat, past or present? I hated the teamswitching in BF and other games. Hell to the NOOOO!

However, I could totally see an IFF Jammer or some similar equipment being used for that purpose. Maybe even a device/module that makes the enemies systems think you're one of them, but disengages as soon as your shooting at someone, like the Spy's disguises in TF2, only that it doesn't make your mech look any different.
Equipment like that would probably only be available for mechs/pilots highly specialised in electronic warfare though

Do you mean, like that campaign mission in MehWarrior 2: Mercenaries, in the Campaign "Gravenhague", where they needed to defend the water supply tanks for for the first two missions and by the third mission (and last of that campaign) your mercenary unit had the option of letting the enemy escape (double pay!) or annihilating them?

Some of them have already discussed the viability of spying on the training routine, strategies and private communications, both inside and outside of forums, of rival Corporations; so, yes, lots and lots of treason, as usual.
That doesn't mean it is going to be something officially implemented in-game, or that it should be...
...While that would make it easier to track such behavior, if only by giving it official sanction, and encouraging treason and griefing.
And why the heck would you do that?
Edit for clarity.

Indeed, switching sides during battle and actually getting a reward for that... Will lead to only one thing. Nobody except the newbs will be willing to team up with anyone he doesn't really trust any more, gods beware even a total stranger. Way to make it harder to get matches...

Yeah, it's realistic and makes for a good plot for a movie, but it does not belong in a 10 vs 10 multi player game.

Small rant aside, realize that in order for someone to join a military, they have to go through significant screening and observation, in addition to being a citizen for x years. You would find it immensely difficult to take a Steiner Mechwarrior, and find a way to weasel him into the Davion military, especially considering that with how valuable and powerful BattleMechs are, anyone allowed to pilot one will have gone through the greatest amount of scrutiny possible, for just the reason you described.
