Since both Mechwarrior and Heavy Gear games are being made now, I thought it would be a perfect time to talk about both of the two Universes.Mechwarrior and Heavy Gear franchise had there similiarities: both the Mechwarrior 2 games and Heavy Gear games were created by Activision, both are Tabletop Games, both had there own animated series, etc. However each universe has there own differences like technology, for example Gears are made for mobility and speed as BattleMech are made to be tanks. But if you had to choose which side would win who would it be? You can talk about which side is better and include Omnimech,Striders, etc if you want.

I don't know much about Heavy Gears, but aren't they Mini Mecha like Protomechs or the mechsuit from District 9? How "good" are they in terms of weapon power and armor? I know Battletech weapons range in triple-digit MJ (megajoules) or single-digit (gigajoules), which is alot higher then most people expect. As in, about 50x the power of guns on modern tanks.

Are Striders closer to Walking Tanks or Humongous Mecha? Battlemechs/Omnimechs sort of fill the gap between them.

So wait, is there a new Heavy Gear game coming out? I can't find anything online.

Anyways, I'm voting Gears 'cause I love the tech. That being said, BattleTech wins my vote in every other aspect.

Gears are like battle suits, they're more like infantry than BattleMechs - the largest gears are striders which most 'Mechs would have no problem destroying.

Having played both I prefer Heavy Gears. Few reasons:
A. More reasonable sized machines.
B. The game had much more customization with the Gears.
C. More options for movement.
D. Loved the story of the first game, second was kinda meh though.
E. Second game added melee weapons.(Not sure if MW series ever added these since I stopped playing after MW: Mercs.)
F. Loved that you could choose sides and pick your regiments.
G. I could go on for awhile.

I think the question of which would win is pretty straight forward. Ton for Ton Mechs have more advantages over Gears in both armor and armament. While Gears simply have size and mobility.

would say between the two a gear could take out even the Aries just due to extreme mobility. The time were a gear would loose is in environments where the gears v engine would be unable to operate. Weapon wise even the heavy gear 1 manual show range of 400m to 4000m with the heavy railgun. Penitrations of the railgun light is 200mm with a rate of fire of 2-3 seconds which with the small profile an speed of the gears a btek mechs rear Armor an legs are history. The strides in the other hand would be painfully slow light mechs in scale of battle tech, I'd say the are like a slower urban mech but with a lot larger bite an by bite its gonna rip the Armor off a heavy the instant it has line of sight.

The two manuals I have both list the weapons of the games, but only the Heavy Gear one breaks down the range and penetration of the weapons. The Mechwarrior book only lists weapon damage values.

Megas XLR wins.

And no, it doesn't have to exist in the poll to win. It's just that good.

those penetration values are against lower tech materials than mech armor, which is much more ablative in nature.

still can see a gear being a nightmare for even light mechs cause they are just a bit larger then a elemental but it be like taking that elemental an strapping a scram jet to its back. buuuuuut thats if its only the faster gears otherwise they are pretty much the between of a light mech an a elemental.

on the note of armor well guess if it didn't penitrate the armor it more or less do like what even ac2s do an rock the target back an forth some though the heavy railgun an lasers in heavy gear pretty much where I WIN weapons dues to slicing parts off or just plain one shotting parts.

Ok checking my source booklet for Heavy Gear and Mechwarrior, the fastest a Gear can get up to is 100kph and that is with the wheel system. Even the giant Atlas can achieve ~46kph.

There are a few weapons that have ranges of 4km however, the majority have ranges between 400-1000 meters. While Mechs have a few weapons with greater than 1km, a vast majority seem to be 400 to 800m.

I seem to recall that outside of light weapons, Gears have very low ammo stores compared to Mechs. So even though the Gears weapons would penetrate a Mech I doubt they have the destructive power or the ammo to cause enough destruction compared to what a simple Light Mech could field. Not unless they got very lucky or caught a Mechwarrior unprepared. Which actually is very possible due to the smaller size of Gears and considering the fact that some Gears used electric engines and had ECM and ECCMs available.

So it looks like in a conventional war/battle Mechs would win, while in unconventional war Gears would win.

IMO
