Later today, at 10:30 p.m. West Coast time(1:30 a.m EST), NASA's Curiosity rover is scheduled to touch down on the surface of Mars. If it's successful, the landing will represent not just a step forward for Martian exploration; it will also represent progress for interplanetary navigation.

Not sure what this is and how long it took to get to this point? Here is a cheat sheet!

Can you imagine the reaction if it fails?

I thought NASA stopped their solar system exploration program due to the lack of funding. ;)

Everyone would love that and space colonisation before we get too old.

i am pretty much sure that this ain´t gonna happen in my lifetime. I mean if i´m lucky i have 80 years to go, 95 years is quite an old age, but i don´t think we will get permanent Moon/Mars colonies. Not with the politics and countries we have now.

Yeah, call me messimistic, i am :)

Edit : Why NOT ? THis is a sci-fi game and this is science . And we´re talking about space, don´t we ? ;)

It will be interesting to watch the actual touchdown video after its all said and done ;)

Posted Image
This Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) camera will fly on the Curiosity rover of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission. The downward-looking camera will take about four frames per second at nearly 1,600 by 1,200 pixels per frame for about the final two minutes before Curiosity touches down on Mars in August 2012. Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego, Calif., supplied MARDI and two other camera instruments for the mission. A pocketknife provides scale for the image.

Also this nuclear powered rovor will be able to send back video in 720p (epic!!) :) They were working with James Cameron(the director of Avatar) on outfitting one of his 3d movie style cams to the rovor but they ran out of time in the engineering process :(

I would consider going, but they had better load some kick *** video games. If Rome 2 Total War was not loaded I would be pissed! :)

what a wild landing!

to take something the size of a car and slow it down from a decent speed of 13,000 mph then detach it to fly under its own rocket power to drop it off smoothly just feet from the ground, on top of that, time a satellite to send back telemetry data with only a 5 minute broadcast window.... wow!
