Looking up the illustrious mercenary unit, I read this:

sarna.net said:

During this period, Dragoon agents were sent throughout the Inner Sphere to recover war orphans and bring them back to Outreach. Once there, the orphans were given a home, educated, and eventually in most cases, joined the Dragoons.

Does anyone know where I can find out more details about these "agents"?
Or examples of such "war orphans" who went through this process?
Or other pertinent information concerning the subject?

Well I do recall FASA had put out three sourcebooks featuring the Dragoons. Two of them were scenario books revolving around the Black Widow Company so I doubt the information would be in there. The final book was I beleive just titled Wolf's Dragoons and discussed a lot of background history of the mercenary company. I haven't seen a copy on a number of years but I think your best bet would be trying to track down a copy of this sourcebook. As far as I know neither FanPro or Catalyst has produced any books specifically about the Dragoons.

Wolfs Dragoons (#1631)
Tales of the Black Widow Company (#1605)
More Tales of the Black Widow (#1657)

I have all three an am slowly working my way through looking for reference of this but I'm not holding my breath. It is a LOT dead tree to look for what will probably be a small snippet of info somewhere.

Also, Jaime's son, Mackenzie, was the product of his marriage to his first wife "Ellen" (while enroute in to the inner sphere). I am guessing since she was a clanner and he was a clanner that Mackenzie was also a clanner (a Freeborn one).

That appears to remove him from the possibility of being a "war orphan".

Fraser was adopted into the Dragoons at an early age.
Also Snord's Irregulars was another force from Clan Wolf that did recon like the Dragoons but split off to look for artifacts more than testing the mettle of the Inner Sphere.

They did keep some ties to the Dragoons as evident of Rhonda Snord's medical assistance that allowed her to still be a Mechwarrior.

They had STRONG ties to the Snords. Without them they would never have gotten Outreach.

Cranston Snord provided the full planetary survey data to Jaime Wolf while giving an inconspicuous report to House Steiner Davion; based on his report, the world was granted to the Dragoons.

I just finished reading the novel Wolves on the Boarder last week which follows the Dragoons during their service with Kurita just prior to the 4th Succession Wars. In the novel it notes that Fraser joined the Dragoons while they served with Steiner and was not at that time privy to many of their secrets (Fraser was the most junior officer in the Drgoons at the time). I had gotten the impression from the book that Fraser was already a mechwarrior when he joined (albeit a young one) altough I could very easily be mistaken.

The book also states that most mechwarriors for the Dragoons come from within the Dragoons itself but it also notes at one point in a very brief conversation between Hanse Davion and his security chief Quintus Allard that Davion had placed a mechwarrior agent disguised as a mercenary with the Dragoons.
