Not talking about tribes here, I mean Starsiege the mech game that was released in 1999. Its a bit more arcadish than mechwarrior series but was a hell of a lot of fun online back in the day. Also having tanks was a cool addition even though they werent that great. Mark Hamil's (luke skywalker) vocals for the campaign were kind of funny too.

I remember that one, too. That was the last of the Earthsiege line before they converted over to the Tribes stuff, which I could not get into. I liked the whole humans vs. rogue AI storyline, and it was a lot of fun. Why they would take out the fun stompy mechs and replace them with jetpacks and disk throwers I will never understand...

I didn't get into it until Tribes came out, and never played Earth or Starseige. I played Starsiege: Tribes, and Tribes 2, but I missed Tribes Vengeance. I was in the beta for Tribes: Ascend, but HiRez had a habit of ignoring their beta testers that carried over into the live game and ignoring the player base.

The story, as I understand it (and this may be totally bogus, but it's what I heard), is that Earthsiege was originally made to be Mechwarrior, or whatever they were going to call the PC version of Battletech at the time. FASA pulled the plug on the project, so Dynamix lost the rights to any name related to Battletech, but they owned the rights to the engine and the game, so they moved forward with the game and called it "Earthsiege" and, moving down the road, "Starsiege".

At some point, they lost the rights to include the large mechs, whether that was a contractual expiration or due to legal action, I don't know. So, they switched to the powered battle armor used in the Tribes titles to keep the Starsiege name going so they could draw in some of their loyal fan base.

Again, that could be totally bogus, but it's what I heard.

Mhmh Im pretty sure I played that one back in the day. The one detail about that game that got stuck in my mind was the technician in the base. A black guy who always said "be careful ok?" before the beginning of each mission. Looked similar to that Gonzales guy in MW4 Vengenace.

in response to the next to last post - starsiege tribes was released some months before starsiege so that reeks of nonsense lol. the "mechs" in starsiege are called hercs and are kind of generic. The game used the darkstar graphics engine i dont think that was the issue, i think dynamix just didnt make enough profits and got dissolved

Yup, I played it. It was one of the first games I ever played online, and it still holds a special place in my heart, as well as its previous games, Earthsiege and Earthsiege 2 (though, I own most of the 'Siege-related games. E.g. Tribes, Cyberstorm, etc). But, I believe the reason why they decided to "drop" Cybrids as an enemy and focus on the Tribes end of things was purely based on potential profits. Starsiege failed to bring it in as expected, so they focused on Tribes which was doing better, apparently. The storyline acounts for this change relatively well (even before Starsiege flopped). So, the 'Brids (as well as HERCs) could come back if HiRez decided to go down that path.

Played ES I & II, and Starsiege extensively online and offline under the name Pit Viper, along with my younger brother, Ice Hawk. Good times, sad to see it die and Tribes continue--even worse being an active member of the SS2845 community and watching that fall apart under horrible leadership and design decisions. Gave up on the franchise, despite far preferring it's storyline and canon over Battletech.

Remember, Happiness is a pile of smoking human steaks. :)

The early 1999-2000 community is still unmatched in my opinion. I actually joined Black Death Union during the Starsiege days.

I've also played Earthsiege 1/2 and loved them. I event beat the Singleplayer several times (just the same as in Mechwarrior). Guess I've always loved Mech games

I played SS for nearly 8 years. I was with RIP and Rage.

In those long ago days I was known as []RIP[]Trog[] and after RIP went poof, []RAGE[]Trog[].

I played mostly CTF and an occasional DM/TDM.

I stopped playing SS when WoW came out.

I still keep in contact with a few of the guys such as []RIP[]Toast'n'Jam.

RIP stood for Raising Immortal Posse and was founded by Greeny. Some of our notable players were Silencer, Storm, MamaT, and with Rage, GDub, Tsa, Warlock, and so many more that have slipped my mind.

RIP went in to MW4 back in the day and we kicked some serious ***. (9 of the top 10 players were from RIP for quite some time, till we got bored and moved on).

I remember with tears in my eyes the war we had with BDU.... (tears of laughter). Those were some fun times.

I have heard there are still people playing SS on a private server run from New Mexico....

I used to play with my buddy Shade. I was pretty terrible so I stuck to playing run and guns that were more to my style, like Tribes and Q2/3.

Yeah, Earthsiege and Starsiege were good games. If you can get hold of the programs they can still be run using DOSBOX. The graphics really show their age though.
