Just noticed it myself... Hmm. Is it a sign of things to come?

Are we going to see a Firestarter, a Flashman (pleaseohpleaseohplease), or maybe the Hermes mentioned in the Facebook poll today?

There's a new concept art in the media section, and it's of the Flamer....

Possible hint to the Firestarter being the next reveal?

Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance BattleTech Reference 4.4.3.5 "Flamer"

"The Flamer is a unique weapon. It is not a starndard flamethrower, but instead vents plasma from the BattleMech's egine onto the enemy BattleMech. It has dramatic effects on the enemy's heat and is availble in both Inner Sphere and Can versions."

The same or different?

Do you mean if Mechwarrior 4's was canonical?

It is. Flamers vent fusion gases as their flame.

I'm not very familiar with this weapon...
...Since it actually vents the high temperature gas within the fusion engine, would it reduce the temperature of the 'Mech it is mounted on?
I was just wondering; if that is the case, maybe I'll finally use it.

the flamer is often counter-productive to the mechwarrior who chooses to use it.
_______________________________________________________________________

Introduced in 2025, the standard Flamer taps into a BattleMech's reactor to produce heat in the form of a plasma release.[3] An extremely short-ranged weapon, the Flamer is devastating against infantry, however damage done against other 'Mechs and vehicles is negligible, though it can raise the enemy unit's heat levels. The Flamer is also often used to set ambient objects such as trees aflame, making it useful for burning forests or cities in order to slow the enemy down or cover friendly movements. A clear example of such is the Firestarter BattleMech.
Heat 3 Damage 2 Minimum Range n/a Short Range 1 Medium Range 2 Long Range 3

Well that puts a crimp in my personal fluff. I figured since mechs like the Firestarter and Vulcan have huge fuel tanks on the arms with flamers that it DID work like a conventional flamethrower. Because of that I figured the system propels jets of liquid either way (whether flammable or non) and since my Vulcan is a backwater garrison mech I figured he wouldn't be doing much actual fighting. With that reasoning I painted it up like a fire truck and like to say that he runs water through his flamer system 99% of the time to help the community. In case of riots he has his machine gun loaded up with rubber bullets (gonna paint it orange and try to fit on 'Less Lethal') and uses the AC/2 in the occasional SWAT action for blasting down doors, getaway cars, or sniping people from blocks away with a 20mm. The medium laser's a medium laser no matter how you look at it. /shrug

There are two types of Flamers in BattleTech. The fusion powered plasma jutting flamer mounted on 'mechs, and the liquid propellant based Vehicle flamer. Both have the same combat effects.

I think it's more a jibe at the flame wars on the forums. Considering it was released to coincide with the 100,000 post on these here forums.

I do hope flamers cause heat damage to pilots. Would make for very interesting melee engagements.

I was about to start a topic about the flamer, but I did a search first...

so my questions are thus.

1) are the other two smaller options design sketches or optional types to be available in the game?

2) since it is mech on mech action (Awwww yeah...) is this flamer a) juiced up to be useful or :P designed as a tactical weapon for cover denial?

it's certainly an interesting choice of a weapon reveal. Flamers seem smart of paper but never really worked in the previous games...so I wonder just how effective it will be...

Take anything from Microsoft's version of MechWarrior with a grain of pepper.

I don't think by revealing a weapon they're hinting at a future 'Mech. Lost of 'Mechs carried flamers.

This was just a unique reward for hitting 100,000 posts.
