Other then updates to the graphics, I wouldnt change gameplay too much other then the originals.
HOWEVER
I would change online play. I would have specific maps for worlds that are being contested, and I'd make it to where you have to conquer a specicfic % of resources on that world ALA warhammer 40k style.
mostly I'd like to see better resources for online tourney plays as well as teams.
I originally played mechcommander online in the 90's and felt they always needed to make a better system for that aspect of the game.

I have always liked how the MechWarrior world kept a story, and kept new weaponry and gadgets in a well outlined time line. I would not only like a new MechCommander(would love it) but it would be a great way to tie the present game we all enjoy and the introduction of Clan weapons and chasi. A storyline that gives a generalized overview of mech history, while tying in the arrival of clan weapons. tying in text based storyline would be more than acceptable, both nostalgic and easy to skip if the player has more of a "get on with it" play style. Some musical elements to go with the text boxes and you have an easy and affordable(not to mention quick) way to acknowledge the MechWarrior universe as a whole, the history, and allude to the future you're designing. All must-haves for a franchise that wants to keep their fans attention! Thumbs up if you do consider making the game a reality, and loud clapping if you use the opportunity to make MechWarrior Online represent an even larger portion of the MechWarrior and future MechWarrior fanbase! Until then I'm going to keep enjoying this great game!
