Is that about normal, or what? Have never really run stuff like these before, and this is the first itme I have monitored core temp, but am trying to keep track, so I make the most of my upgrades in the future.

The current setup is:

1x Rosewill Ranger ATX mid size Case (with top 140mm fan, rear 120mm exhaust fan and front 120mm)
1x ASRock 990 extreme 4 mobo
1x AMD 6core FX 6200 (3.8/4.1 ghz) (Stock heatsink)
1x EVGA GeForce 560 SSC vidcard
2x 4gb Patriot Viper Extreme RAM
1x Cosair Pro series HX650w modular PSU
1x WD Caviar Black 1tb HDD
1x ASUS 24x DVD burner

when just doing basic stuff, it runs between 16-17oC, but when in game it kicks to around 40o.
Am trying to decide which item to add next:

1) 128 gb SSD
2) Corsair h60 Hydro cooler
3) 2x 4gb RAM

advice?

That is a good temperature. most CPUs won't autoshutdown until 90C

What Greyrook mentioned.

Most Standard gaming Rigs idle temp at approx 30-40 degrees Celcius.
Without adding aftermarket Cooling utilities(fans,heatsinks,watercooling)

If a Game puts your Computer under load then your CPU and GPU will jump to around 50-60 degrees Celcius.

Only be worried about either if they start spiking over 65-70C

And then most motherboards will have an alarm or auto shutdown utility built in to prevent burning out a CPU.

really...u don´t need those "upgrades" ur system is still fine...

waste of money....

edit

only if u want a very fast hdd access for video edit or similar things u can buy a ssd and if u want a quieter case then u can try watercooler.

but is not a must have for gaming. only more ram makes a sense.

even with my large heatsink i see ~40-45C while gaming. but its also 80-85 in my house. your fine. if you can id be more mindful of your gpu temp. i doubt its too hot but i like to see mine. msi afterburner will allow you to see FPS, GPU temp and GPU load while gaming

40C is okay for your processor, but I recommend you look into a third party heatsink and fan. Take a look at the table in the link below to get an idea on the performance of a number of third party air coolers.

http://www.frostytec...eid=2588&page=4

I am not familiar with the Rosewill case you have, so it will be important to know how mush space is available between the CPU and the side case panel. The Noctua NH-C14 will likely fit and it offers above average performance in its class.

Unless your room is around 16-17'c(60'f), it is impossible for your CPU to be running at 16-17'c without the use of extreme cooling(TEC unit at the very least). Air or water cooling will not cool your hardware to any lower temp than the room's ambient temp. What are you using to check your temps?

Really? I lived at NAS Lemoore (near Fresno) in the late 80'ties and every building on base had AC(125'f days durning July and Aug kinda dictated the need for AC)

ya....marine corps is too cheap for crap like that. even the brand new houses dont have AC. and those houses are dedicated to people with kids. but anywho, 40C is not hot. my AMD has a max temp of ~62C so you have plenty of headroom

As others have said that is a perfectly respectable temp.

I do keep my room like a fridge, actually, lol. As for what I am checking with, I tried several programs over the last two days, and most seemed to give me the same readings, so stuck with Coretemp as it is that generally seemed to have the better reviews. I know that anything cnet recommends is anathema to "serious" gamers, but too often I have found the "advice" from the gaming crowd to be purely opinions, and have actually had components damaged, and other issues from that route.

If there is a "big-boy" well regarded program that is downloadable from a secure site that is better, I will be happy to compare it hto.

Personally CPUID HW Monitor is better, its more in depth shows your CPU,GPU,HDD,Mobo temperatures as well as listing the voltages from the PSU and also Fan speed.

That is an exact copy of CPUID HW monitor. http://www.cpuid.com.../hwmonitor.html
So likely just as good as its using the same programming.

Hey guise check out my kickass CPU thread?

Can't really take this serious. Anyone who gets to monitoring his hardware knows 40 °c is very good.

For a stocked hs thats fine, nothing to worry about. You could lower your heat some by going in to bio, and turn off both turbo, and performance booter.

1) 128 gb SSD - Not worth it
2) Corsair h60 Hydro cooler -Not worth it
3) 2x 4gb RAM-Only if you hate having extra empty slots

I would recommend the Hyper 212 plus http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835103065

Those water cooling kits have the same performance as a good hs and fan while cost 2 or 3 times as much.

Laptops in general get very warm, as there is not much room inside for air circulation, and typically the fan vent is on the underneath side of the laptop...so on a surface not ideal.

Laptop cooling pads etc can help but not amazingly so
