Ok looked through the FAQ and did a quick search. So what happens when:
You get head shotted by a clan PPC(or similar 1 shot weapon)? Make a new character? Wake up in a hospital?

What happens if your mech gets blown out from under you, say the engine goes nova? Is there a newb mech that free that you house issues you or what? Fluffwise you join the ranks of the dispossessed, but in game that would hardly be conducive to a long lasting game.

I believe a house or merc insurance rep shows up,does an estimate on the damages and hospital bills and cuts a check. you if you survive,it will be deducted from your savings to pay for all bills. If dead you will jutst have to pay funeral cost unless you where with a house in which the cost of funeral will be part of being a representitive of the house you where fightintg for. Otherwise will have to see what happens lol

our mechs have no heads.

and if you'er avatar dies (which is not possible) you come back as either a animae mech with enormous weapons and hands or a 1980's TRO design (basically 3 carboard boxes stacked on top of each other with guns for hands and skinny legs).

Then your mech does a bunch of dance moves until you log out.

/it's gonna be AWESOME!
//and no, none of that is true

I was actually serious. Have the devs discussed this at all?

From the Dev's Q-and-A:

Quote

Will the MechWarrior® (that is, the player's avatar within the 'Mech) be subject to any particular effects during missions (e.g. injury resulting from hits to the BattleMech's head, falling, ammo explosions (injury as the result of an electric shock from feedback through the neurohelmet), and/or prolonged extreme overheating of the 'Mech)?

[PAUL] We are continuing to investigate what we will be able to do, but it’s a fine line between providing detail and obscuring gameplay and HUD information.

[DAVID] The MechWarrior® won’t actually take any sort of damage or be at risk of dying separately from the ‘Mech itself. However, we hope to have some visual effects like the ones that you’ve mentioned.

[MATT N] If you get shot with an AC-20 in the head the hula girl has real Hula girl Physics™!

I was the one who asked the question... :D
So, there we have it - official confirmation of "no pilot death separate from 'Mech destruction".

Upon 'Mech destruction, on the other hand... I believe there was some discussion on the subject, especially with regard to how a spectator mode might be implemented in such a way that the "dead" cannot become ethereal scouts for their still-"living" comrades, and such.
(I'll leave digging those discussions up to someone else...)

Your avatar can't die permanently the devs have said that much.

Death of an Avatar would result in frustrated and angry humans, who go postal outside the piranha offices....

You don't believe me look at Wow, Everquest, etc etc etc they actually get threats daily for locking out avatars because of in Game Violations...

It's weird what "pixel Identities" become to people in real life...

Yeah, and I would run out of name variations of Opus quickly too . . .

Yeah, this is one situation where I'm glad the devs have come down on the side of fun instead of realism. The issue of being able to lose your mech in combat is less hairy but still concerning.
