I am a huge Mechawarrior fan since the early 80's when Battletech first came out in PnP. One of the best aspects of Mechwarrior I've seen so far is the original online version from Prodigy and AOL. The over-arching gameplay, where 'we' the Mechpilots strove to increase our House's power structure across the BT universe compelled thousands of players to easily cough up to $3 per hour on gameplay. Universal conquest was real-time based on effective missions played. In addition to that, the arena was also available to hone your skills on the homeworld.

What lacked however is real consequences to piloting a mech. What I'd like to see in this online version is the need to jump from planet to planet like the TT version. Then, add the possibility of injury and death for mech pilots who are careless. Of course, death to a mech-pilot typically means getting head-shotted, as per TT rules. In TT rules, mechs can purchase clones whom keep their skills "up-to-date" the point where they last 'saved' their clones memory. Clones can only be refreshed on planets who have cloning facilities, which are typically back on established homeworld bases. The need to jump back to a cloning facility to update a pilots memory will make a strategic choice for players on whether they want to risk death, or 'keep on assaulting' a beach head. Death to a Mechwarrior would mean reviving back at the cloning station, and thus requiring jump time back to the front.

This would help make realtime assaults on the front lines much more meaningful.

I don't see that happening. Ever.

What do you see the point of MWO, other than repeated mission drops? Collecting credits and pilot exp? Any point to the gameplay or not?

Er, killing each other in giant stompy robots...

Why would we want non-canon cloning and the chance to be randomly inconvenienced by headshots?

I would think that in the world where battle mechs are possible, they would have ejection systems sophisticated enough to save the pilots life. I never liked the idea of clones. I would agree with an injury idea. Perhaps needing to be bionics or implants to replace extremely damaged body parts. I have been playing in the beta and I have yet to see a mech killed with a head shot. Most are when the engine gets hit. Which was the most common in the TT game.

Another way keep the death of a mech warrior in the game is to do something similar to Mech Commander. You play a merc group or house commander and you chose a pilot to send on the mission. You then take on the role of the pilot in the mission.

I have played TT and the MechWarrior RPG and the old online version as well as MW1-4 and MC1-2. I really enjoy all of the games.
