IMHO 7x zoom is too high to be "standard", especially for the very first Scout unlock. I mean, that's pretty intense and will promote rampant sniping tactics.

What I'd like to see is this Pilot zoom skill lowered to, say, 4x, and a 7x or higher zoom made into a special "Advanced Imaging System" Module that you can equip on your Mech to actually specialize in serious long-range shooting, like for LRM boats, Gauss snipers and Scouts.

Unless 7X is actually equivalent to +70% of norm Zoom. So not quite double 1X. :o

Those are tentative numbers but think of this too...

Buddy pulls up his 7x zoom and is set to "snipe". As he's scanning for enemies, his FOV has been narrowed drastically. He doesn't notice that scout Mech up on the hill that just targeted him and is calling in LRM fire from the Atlas across the canyon. Mr. Sniper suddenly finds himself hanging upside-down in a radar array smouldering like a pillow after a Mexican food night. :o

Wasn't there a gadget thing that had a big zoom window with extra scope power in MW4 Mercs?

If I didn't know better, that sounds like some one close to the Project. Who could we trust? Buddy! omg

hmmm, I don't think scout mechs can mount enough nasty weaponry to make this sniping that much of a game breaker...If anything it works to make there smaller weapons load out slightly more viable, which is a good thing I think,

I would think 7x = 700%. Which is massive.

Anyway, I was wrong in my original assumption that this 7x Zoom will be a "passive" ability once unlocked -- it looks like you'll have to equip some sort of advanced Module. However my concern/suggestion about having a more standard 3-4x Zoom still applies.

mechs have had a zoom magnification function of one kind or another in MW games since forever and a half.

are some of you really saying mechs shouldn't be able to zoom in?

No, I don't think anybody in this thread has said Mechs shouldn't be able to zoom. Quite the opposite, I said Mechs should get a 3-4x zoom standard and a 7x or more zoom as a module/pilot specialization.
