Just wondering what goes on between missions, is it just a screen toggling through available missions, news, etc..
Or are we able to we walk around a base in a humanoid form, interacting with other players, NPCs or objects (like a billboard of said available missions and recent events) in the vicinity?

Not sure about the billboard or interacting... But I do have the impression our game avatars can walk around the 'merc corp' base and such. I hope they at least allow a bit of avatar interaction. Would love to sit in my Base during a un eventful evening and RP some.

I just can't see this happening anytime soon. I don't see MWO as a traditional MMO, more like a team deathmatch kind of game with RPG elements in the meta game portion. I'd rather the developers focus on adding 'Mechs, maps and equipment and fine tuning the core gameplay first before we consider avatars and open world interactions.

F.A.Q says:
Q. Can I get out of the Mech?
A. Will you be able to get out of the Mech? No. One of our gameplay design pillars is that we are putting you in the role of the pilot (MechWarrior®) in a first person perspective.
Interactions with other players, therefore, should be limited to the forums and the ig-chat. At least that's what my educated guess would be. Maybe the devs will work something out to increase player interaction, but that shouldn't be the main focus of the game (and it isn't really necessary for the game to be attractive / successful).

It could also be meaning get out of mechs like MWLL where you can eject and run around.

For me that quite directly answers the questionCoffiNail, the rest is just the explanation for it.
Besides, imo MWO needs a walking around as pilot about as much as EvE needed walking on stations.

And get stepped on? Seriously though, unless you have room for a man-portable SRM-2 in your cockpit, not like your sidearm is going to be all that useful....

I see this game happening League of Legends style. Waiting around in a pretty bland UI lobby until you find a skirmish to join. Except hopefully with a wicked star map that lets you see the territories move and shift real time. No out of mech action. As much as I would like to see it.

Never played League of Legends but I'm hoping of some way to interact with other gamers and environment between missions even if it's a standard base concourse layout with a few minor aesthetic touches.
A general chat channel perhaps as well maybe?

I don't think a 3d lobby, walking around as a pilot, would really add anything to the game, and it'd be quite a lot of resources to develop for a minor feature.

Got to agree with cobrafive. I see no benefit, and just hassle and more time developing, which means a later launch. It'd be amusing, sure, but chat windows and forums boards could accomplish just as much RP value.
