There needs to be a setting in the menu or a button that allows the player to switch between cotpit view and third-person view so that players that are use to this feature can play within this enviroment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An example is Mechassault this game is set inside of the battletech-universe yet it has third-person view but it dosen't have cotpit view.

First of all, don't bring up Mech Assault. Ever. Thank you. As for your comment, third person view won't be implemented, this has already been stated by the developers. In a game where LOS is a huge factor this would give an unfair advantage over cockpit users.

I'm a little unclear why shouldn't i reference from Mech Assault? It is a very decent game, Also as for Cockpit users sure they do have a lack of sight but they would also have access to features on the heads-up display that people in Third-person view just wouldn't have.

Also about the the Developers stating that i wouldn't mind a link to that statement, Also a link to google wouldn't help at all.

From the Developers (specifically, MWO's Lead Designer, Paul Inouye):

Quote

MechWarrior Online is being designed to put you the player in the seat of the pilot. It is 100% first person view only. Being the pilot is one of our key design pillars and 3rd person breaks that pillar on multiple levels as seen in many of the other 3rd Person discussions.

We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.

While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

Well, Mech Assault may be a decent game on it's own, but for fans of the old Mechwarrior games it was nothing short of an insult. But it's just another sign of the ongoing simplification epidemic in games. So don't feel offended, i didn't meant it personally. Just keep in mind that most people around here won't think very highly of it.

As for the developer statement, Strum Wealh was faster, here is the link for completeness sake.

You won't be disappointed. Mechassault was and is just a simplified, more silly version of the Mechwarrior.

Wasn't Mechwarrior 4 released as freeware some time ago? I read about that somewhere, but never checked it out, as i still have the disks. So if you want to you might give that a try. I still think MW3 was superior, but the differences to Mech Assault should become obvious, even with MW4.

no third person. It goes against the 'you are the pilot' feel intended by the developers, and gives unfair advantage to those who use it

see round obstacles, see over hills, see behind/below/beside your mech, all while providing a vantage point from an invisible invincible floating camera.

From the cockpit view, if you can see an enemy he can see you. This is not true for 3rd person and lets you see object/terrain/enemies that your mech itself can't see.

If you want 3rd person you'll have to go elsewhere.

Well, If they won't give us third person why can't they give us reverse cams that slot on to your mech.

As have already been stated, 3rd person veiw will not be added.

Comparing this game to Mechassault is not going to help you.
Even though Mechassault and Mechwarrior are both based on Battletech, they are 2 completely separate games.
If you try to compare the two you will get allot of angry MW/BT fans telling you how they are not anything alike, and they will not be nice about it either.

MA was a 3rd person only console arcade mech shooter.
MW is and always has been a mech simulator, intended to put you in the cockpit, not in an arcade like view behind the mech.

If you expect this to be anything like MA, then you are going to be very disappointed.

This will unfortunately not be happening either.
The Cryengine 3 which this game is using are simply not able to do that.
Its not that they dont want to, its just not possible or so difficult to get to work that its not the effort to even try.

In the future I suggest you take some time to search the forums and read the stickies.
It will answer almost all you questions.

They keep asking and bringing it up because they are so used to getting what they want if they just keep bringing it up.
They are so used to game developers almost always going the way of the vocal minority, and as such expect to get their will here as well if the just keep asking enough times.

Third person throws off the balance, you are meant to be driving in the cockpit, limited visibilty and all that.

I must say, pretty impressed so far, although I don't like the hardpoint restrictions, I prefer the more open design of the original Battletech rules as well as the original mechs. I would kill for a Locust or a Battlemaster!

Ok lets be realistic.. In Real life, if mechwarrior machines existed, why would you have a 3rd person view? How are you viewing yourself in a 3rd person view? is there floating cameras? I dont think so...

ITs more realistic being in the seat, your view-points is based ahead of you, so you have to rely on your sensors and radar, you have to play with tactical input and trust in your machine, then seeing everything above and not really having any fun? 3rd person view is fun for some games, but not fun for a game like this. and if you really wanna compare this game to another, there is another game that i believe may be mechwarrior's 1 and only rival which is called Hawken. at least from what i've seen of gameplay. Though as a mechwarrior fan. :) I prefer this overall.

a small side tip for people who assume the search function will always get results the search function will only allow the user to get a direct root to a thread that has something relative if they've typed in the correct thread name, Sure this isn't so for the more wider use search function but it mite not give you a more direct root to a thread with infomation about it.

Now, As for this thread i'm going to request that it be Lock, And Or. Deleted.
