From the Developers (specifically, MWO's Lead Designer, Paul Inouye):
Quote
We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.
While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

see round obstacles, see over hills, see behind/below/beside your mech, all while providing a vantage point from an invisible invincible floating camera.
From the cockpit view, if you can see an enemy he can see you. This is not true for 3rd person and lets you see object/terrain/enemies that your mech itself can't see.
If you want 3rd person you'll have to go elsewhere.

As have already been stated, 3rd person veiw will not be added.
Comparing this game to Mechassault is not going to help you.
Even though Mechassault and Mechwarrior are both based on Battletech, they are 2 completely separate games.
If you try to compare the two you will get allot of angry MW/BT fans telling you how they are not anything alike, and they will not be nice about it either.
MA was a 3rd person only console arcade mech shooter.
MW is and always has been a mech simulator, intended to put you in the cockpit, not in an arcade like view behind the mech.
If you expect this to be anything like MA, then you are going to be very disappointed.

This will unfortunately not be happening either.
The Cryengine 3 which this game is using are simply not able to do that.
Its not that they dont want to, its just not possible or so difficult to get to work that its not the effort to even try.
In the future I suggest you take some time to search the forums and read the stickies.
It will answer almost all you questions.

They keep asking and bringing it up because they are so used to getting what they want if they just keep bringing it up.
They are so used to game developers almost always going the way of the vocal minority, and as such expect to get their will here as well if the just keep asking enough times.

I must say, pretty impressed so far, although I don't like the hardpoint restrictions, I prefer the more open design of the original Battletech rules as well as the original mechs. I would kill for a Locust or a Battlemaster!

ITs more realistic being in the seat, your view-points is based ahead of you, so you have to rely on your sensors and radar, you have to play with tactical input and trust in your machine, then seeing everything above and not really having any fun? 3rd person view is fun for some games, but not fun for a game like this. and if you really wanna compare this game to another, there is another game that i believe may be mechwarrior's 1 and only rival which is called Hawken. at least from what i've seen of gameplay. Though as a mechwarrior fan.
