The last time I played MechWarrior was when I was in elementary school, (good times with MW2 on the playstation)
The tabletop game is something that interests me as well, but I've never been familiar with the fluff so to speak.

are there any good resources to read on the Battletech universe? books? websites? anything?

Look for the PDF "Hitchhikers Guide to Battletech". A great summary before the Clan Invasion.

The actual Battletech site is a good place to start.

The Universe Guide is also great to get some overall understanding.

Fiction is available in Battlecorps, they provided a free sampler of stories in this one PDF

Wikis are okay to get a general idea, but I usually use them to have an idea of where to go in my official books.
