As a BattleTech fan on the go I would love a mobile version of the forums. A lot of other video game communities have implemented some sort of way to communicate while on the go, and I think having a mobile version implemented would be great for the community. While an entire MWO iOS or Android app. would definitely need some funding, there are much simpler alternatives. For example TapaTalk for iOS and Android is an app that makes forum posting very easy for mobile users. Another alternative would be to have just a simple redirect when mobile users connect to the forums it sends them to the mobile version. Would you as a community member enjoy a mobile forum?

why would we need a mobile app when we can just open the browser and read the forum?

The forums on a mobile device are quite difficult to read and post in at the current time. Having to zoom in and out to read posts. Having a mobile forum would be nice.

At least on an iPhone, it's a bit clumsy to view the forums on the small screen - you have to do a lot of zooming and scrolling to make anything readable. I'm not prone to post on forums from a mobile device, but for those that are I can see how a built for mobile version of the site would be handy, though not, strictly speaking, necessary.
Apologies for the "double post" of sorts, seems you posted while I was typing, OP.

Indeed not necessary, but it is nice for community regulars who post on a daily basis from work, school, in the airport etc, and don't have access to a computer but a smart phone.

Exactly, I don't think it would be too hard for the webmaster to make an adjustment for us mobile users.
