D'you think we'll see them at all?

I do recall a while ago a news feed article touting the rugged Fortress and not-so-subtly suggesting that perhaps those of us planning to play as a merc corp would do well to sink funds into a dropship rather than rely on transport supplied by one's employer.

So, perhaps whilst those who are fighting on behalf of the great houses and folded into their military, merc groups could see some perks depending on their choice of transport - aerodyne designs such as the Leopard or Taihou could perhaps permit greater choice in hotdrop location, whereas having an Overlord parked up your end of the map could offer significant fire support.

Also lest we forget the costs involved in shifting these multi-ton behemoths we love so much between far-flung worlds - would owning your own dropship ease the burden on your wallet in the long run? Jumpship fees would still be in effect but hey, it's something.

Anyways, 's just something to think about.

I doubt highly we'll actually see them on the battlefield. Owning a dropship would likely incur maintenance and fuel fees. Would that be more or less than paying for house transport? I don't know. Anywho I see your leopard and raise you a Fortress.

I could foresee a merc unit having it's own dropships and maybe jumpships. Either that or transport would be part of their contract and they would be earning less. I don't know that they'd have a battlefield role though, they probably just be expenses on the balance sheet, unless it was as some sort of special scenario akin to attacking someones guild hall.

I will be sorely disappointed if there is no scenario where a lance or two takes on a grounded dropship. It's been in just about every Mechwarrior game up to this point, it would be a shame not to have it in MWO.

It's useful in order to give players a sense of perspective. Standing next to something that makes an Atlas look small is a humbling experience.

Well maybe even it serves as something of an 'anchor' for a merc unit when trying to hold a planet, since you can't necessarily be available to hold off enemies at all times. Exactly how it'd work, I'm not sure since we don't even know how that whole system is gonna turn out.

Aside from their obvious tranport value, dropships function as field bases for invasionary forces and are quite dangerous to a force as large as a company of mechs (depending on the dropship of course).

That having been said, ownership of a dropship (outside of great houses) isn't exactly common since they are still classified as lostech and aside from that astronomically expensive to own and operate.

In gameplay terms, I think having one as either a neutral capture node (e.g. the two teams are trying to capture an abandoned ship) or as a team destroy option (the dropship acts as a base that provides turrets and/or a repair site) would work quite well.

I think dropships might be some form of housing.
If they put housing into the game at all.

Dropships on the battlefield would ruin your opponent's day. The amount of guns on that thing is enough to rip apart anyone foolish enough to stay on one place for a few seconds.
