I think the biggest issue with this may be that if they did it they'd have to give weight and physics properties to everything that's interactable and could be used in such a way. The 10% rule on a mech's lifting capability makes sense since you're piloting something that is carrying several tons of weapons and armor in the arms and body of the mech already. If you had less then Maximum tonnage on a mech in addition to lightening the load on the arms themselves then you'd have a reason why you could lift more the 10% of the mech's tonnage.

Also.. 10% of an Atlas's Tonnage is 10 Tons.. that's 20,000 lbs it can lift. That's pretty impressive considering it's loaded with weapons and armor. Best way to describe it would be to imagine having a full body armor suit with camping gear and you've got rifles and other things strapped to your body. You may be able to lift more then 10% of your own bodyweight.. but if you're already carring something 10% of your bodyweight might be the safest thing you could lift without falling over or injuring yourself.

Now.. using the same lodgic.. if an Atlas punched something with similar weight and force and you hit a pilot's hud.. someone just said hello to an Atlas's fist and goodbye to his mech and possibly his life if he didn't eject.

would be kinda cool if you could find self contained weapons around the battlefield like the Battlemaster's PPC and carry it.

I would like my Atlas to be able to pick up the cellphone I dropped and dial out for a pizza whilst I am stomping squealing worms from tango mudholes.

Does that count?

Mechs don't use cell phones silly, they have built in satellite phones. "hey guys stop fighting for a sec so I can text my GF back on New Avalon"

That's LosTech, old chap. Not all of us poor mercs have the ability to spring for LosTech.

Apparently I'll have to go back to smoke signals then.

Tear a large industrial chain from it's mountings at a dockyard, use it as a flail

So then you can say that you made an enemy mech "taste the chain"

again and again, long after he was incapable of tasting anything.

Being able to dig and move wreakage around provides props for setting a scene.

Any number of tactical illusions could present themselves.

By far the most useful use for hands on a mech is getting back up again after a fall.
