Most games cheat on melee weapons anyway (they're portrayed in the programming as a 1m "shot") -- this would all be outrageously difficult to program. All the Mechs would have to be modeled with deformable textures and so on. Lots and lots of work.

True, implementing melee for launch is unlikely, but for the sake of discussion...

During vietnam, the F-4 Phantom was not fitted with a gun because at that time, it was assumed with the dawn of guided missiles, jet fighters would never get within range to use their guns. Ooooh how wrong they were. (look it up) :)

Likewise, mechs, especially in close-quarters urban environments could DEFINITELY see melee combat. A 50 ton walking robot is a weapon itself even BEFORE you arm it with anything, just as a car can be too :D

Stomp if they implement tanks/support vehicles/battle armor/infantry (>.>), but specific melee weapons would be a first-choice in my mind. I want to keep these things as walking tanks, not the dancing mecha suits of Gundam (BattleTech already had that issue with RoboTech, I think). Anyway, the Hatchetman is easily the first thing we think of, but there's also the katana-wielding No-Dachi of the Draconis Combine.

Also, this: http://www.sarna.net...lee_BattleMechs

So, yes, I'd like the implementation, but I'm not going to be sorely disappointed if it doesn't happen. But hey, this is a progressive game. Maybe somewhere down the line.

melee, i want all of them melees

i am so tired of mechs bumping into each other out of desperation and just unloading

it looks dumb and awkward.

I want to see atlases backhand smaller mechs off their feet. I want to see hunchbacks kick heads off of fallen mechs. I want to see awesomes use their claw hand to rip a mech's head right off.

give me some articulated demolition derby

Not all weapons are suitable for every situation. melee is a part of the universe and it is an important part, especially in the 'future' as was mentioned before.

Punch, easy to land, free to use, 1 in 6 chance of hitting the cockpit.

I think leaving it out leaves a gaping hole in the game experience.
Think of the revelation of being able to rifle but someone in Halo(may have been elsewhere first, but they used it best)

There is no option to choose Death from Above. Nothing like a DFA to start the day out right.

I cast my write in vote for DFA.

Okay this would be hard to balance, but if I get a mech of the same class behind another mech I wouldn't mind an assassination attack with my weapons. Like animate and shove the weapon into the back of the mech and fire then have the mech drop down forward. It would have to be difficult and only happen if you were sneaking up behind a preoccupied mech.

I envisaged it like you enter a grapple mode both players hve to enter a combination modified by weight class/hands/damage etc-Better for console really-regardless, a blue sphere drops over the two mechs other players can't shoot in while they see the animation of the grapple then whoever wins he grapple deals damage and they are forced apart lifting the sphere/grapple animation and play continues.
Just riffing here.

Melee attack rotation for me would look something like DFA->melee->kick. Then move on to the next target, because gdi if they are still standing up after that I better get the !@#$ out of there. Next target would likely be charge->Melee and weapon fire before beating feet and pulling out entirely before getting melted into a puddle of goo.

Melee attacks was one of the few things the more nimble mechs with arms had going for them compared to the hoards of marauders, timberwolves/madcats, mad dogs, thors, catapults, etc out there.

I am sure it will be a pain to code, but if done well will add another layer to the game.

A clanner would never stoop so low as to beat a war machine like a barbarian.

This is another reason I want melee. When Clans invade I want to beat the really heavy Clan RPers into a messy pulp.

I want to join a game where a player on the opposing team asks for honoring "zellbrigen" and I want to agree to it. Then when I am at close range I want my entire team to lay into the single mech I was dueling right before I put a hatchet into his face.

And then I want to drink his tears.

You obviously haven't read some btech fiction. It is much rarer for Clanners but it has happened. In fact some of the newest melee weapons to be developed in the btech universe were pioneered by the clans. You can also look up the Karhu omnimech.

*** I hate melee weapons because the stats in the boardgame are so terrible but when push comes to shove if they existed I would equip my mech with them. These are one of my guilty pleasures.

Since TacOps a lot of new melee oriented weapons have come out but I think it would be hard to properly implement them all. Here is how I would try to implement the following from the boardgame.

Defensive
Shield -
These come in 3 flavors and each larger size has a higher level of absorbing damage for free up to X number of times. Smaller shields absorb less damage, has less number of times to absorb damage and have the least impact on your mobility.
Shields can be used offensively to shield bash.
Spikes
Deal damage back to anyone who tries to melee them with their body instead of weapon. Spikes can also increase the chance shots will deflect off of your mech.

Offensive
Claws-
Better damage than fists and retains the ability to hit the cockpit accurately.
Chain Whip-
A way to physically grab someone at a greater range and knock them to the floor with greater ease than any other weapon.
Lance-
Impractical to swing around like other melee weapons but offers superior capabilities at defending against charges and performing charge attacks on other players.
Talons -
Increased damage from leg related attacks.
Vibroblade-
When the blade is powered up you can critically disable an internal component if your aim is good. The blade loses power after a successful attack and needs to be re-vibrate itself again.
Sword-Mace-Axe
All essentially the same thing. They offer better reach and damage than fists and claws but lack the accuracy to make hits to the cockpit. Sword is the fastest weapon and does middle of the road damage but is the least durable. Axe does the most damage but is the most cumbersome weapon to use. Mace does the least damage, is the most durable but has the best ability to knock a person down more consistently than either weapon.
Flail-
Don't bother implementing this weapon.

There are also physical weapons from construction mechs but I want to talk about them in an entirely new thread.

Stunning a mech? Maybe kicking him out of balance but nothing you wouldn´t achieve with a bunch of rockets aswell. But stunning in general... its a mech. And if the pilot resists the explosion of 20 rockets a little punch won´t stun him either. :)
