Star Frontiers, loved it. Probably one of the best games back then. My friends and I played that over and over... fond memories.

I used to play that game with my brother as a kid. No idea what happened to it, but I never thought I'd ever see that box again.
*edit*
Ok, I just did a bunch of research and found out that's not the game I was thinking of. The game I was thinking of was Thunder Road, LoL. For some reason that Battlecars box still looks really familar though.

What makes me feel old was that there was a time when there were actually stores dedicated to selling these glued-together piles of paper we called 'books'.

Nah thats the 1st Edition. Looks like he picked up the pewter minis the same time he got the game. i did the same thing when I bought my box set. 1984, Robotech on the tv, battletech on the table, life was good. My profile name is from those days. A dear friend, passed away now 20 years, used it and we played this religiously. Just seemed fitting to use his old call sign here.

The FASA hovertank game would be Renegade Legion, yeah. There was also a space combat game in that series, Interceptor, and an RPG. Another awesome FASA setting, really, and it's a shame it was never anywhere near as well known as the Battletech universe. I'd love to see someone bring it back.

Yeah, those are the Exosquad toys. They are actually one of the triggers of the whole unseen issue.
Fasa tried to get Playmates interested in doing a Battletech toy line and Playmates declined. Then they turned around and made Exosquad and even released Macross toys under the Exosquad label. Fasa sued Playmates. Unfortunately for FASA, not only did they fail to gain an injunction against Playmates, but they pissed off Playmates' business partner of the time, Harmony Gold (the HGUSA in the copyright). While FASA had leased what they thought were visual rights from a third party, Harmony Gold had licensed the Macross property directly from Tatsunoko Productions. Under Japanese law this gave Harmony Gold co-ownership of the original Macross designs and all derivative works in North America. As near as anyone can tell, the people that FASA got their licence from only ever had the right to import models, not any form of visual rights.
FASA and Harmony Gold settled out of court, and FASA decided to remove all images not wholly owned (and originally created) by FASA. This included not only the Macross designs, but those from Crusher Joe, Fang of Sun Dougram, and those designed by VMI for the 3055 tech readout.
Hence.....the Unseen.
For those who are interested, the court documents are available at http://terrania.us/hg-fasa/
