After reading some about the faction units where open for everybody and no real leaderhip i had an idea i would like to share.
All the faction units are open to join as you like. But when you want to band together then you can create a "guild" inside the faction unit. When you got a set number of people that want to follow you then you can start with an Battalion, that can have a number based on how many "guilds" there are, and an battalion name.
When enough people are in the battalion then you can expand it with a 2nd a third etc. In that way a group can form there own group that works and coordinate together. While still alouwing others to join the faction unit.
Those battlions could have there own chat channel, maybe get a option to upload a battalion logo to show.
How about being able to set ranks, not that it overrides your actual faction rank, but giving the battalion leaders the option to set a rank inside their unit.

An idea for faction unit leadership

They already said they will be adding custom faction units at a later date though? Or is this just so people can create little units under Canon faction units?
The problem with that is, it would be difficult for these "guilds" to stay intact in the Regular regiments, since once people get enough XP they can move on to the "elite" canon regiments.

Yes the general idea is to have player groups under the canon faction units. You and some friends join a faction regiment say the 3rd Dieron Regulars, and then decide well we want to band together similar like a guild in other MMO's. To form your own unit inside a faction regiment you going to need a minimum amout of players say 8 or 10 to start with. Since your the first player group in that unit you get the designation 1st Battlion 3rd Dieron Regulars. And you get to choose some name for your battalion like The Blazing Katana's.
An other group of people also join the 3rd Dieron and also want to make there own group, so they are going to be the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Dieron Regulars. etc etc.
You go and work to expand your unit get people to join up, and eventually when you reach a certain number of people you can expand to 2 battaltions or even 3 4 5..
Once you got enough players to join some certain elite house regiment you can decide when lets form a battalion in the 8th Sword of Light and slowly move over to there, while keeping the original group to train new members.
Units aiming to join a elite canon regiment might want to have an battalion in a standard regiment to recruit and train people up to their level. Several player groups could even join forces and together run a group to train people up. It will take teamwork and planning, but thats something that any good guild has to do to keep its members and to grow. They might even decide to ditch the old battalion and just take in new members who got a high enough standing to join. But thats a decision that the leaders of that player group have to make for themselfs.
Also if you just want to join a House Regiment as lonewolf or dont want to join some player unit thats still a option, you just wont be part of one of those player groups. So somebody joining the 3rd Dieron Regulars on their own will only have that name as their unit. And if that player gets enough points to join an elite regiment then they can hop over to there.
An other group of people also join the 3rd Dieron and also want to make there own group, so they are going to be the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Dieron Regulars. etc etc.

I hope it doesn't work that way. I'd much rather that if you want to have your own custom-named unit, you create a mercenary unit with that name. You can become affiliated with a faction just by working for that faction and gaining Loyalty Points for them. Eventually, other factions won't offer to hire you, as you'll have too much LP with the one faction.
I'm hoping it works like this: You pledge allegiance to your chosen faction, joining a low-level canon unit (or maybe a non-canon generic training unit) by default. You do missions for the, earning LP towards that faction. At a certain threshold, you start getting offers from higher-level canon units. If you decide to join one of those units, you get to choose which regiment of the unit you join. No custom naming though -- you just join a canon regiment of a canon unit. As your LP total gets higher, you continue to get offers from better units until you get THE offer -- the best unit finally contacts you and says they need you.
That way, canon units won't actually have player leadership or ranks (as somebody official has already stated in a dev blog or Q&A session or whatever) and custom units can have whatever leadership they want.

From what i understand mercs and house units have diverent goals and options. I dont feel its a good idea that if people want to band together as a group that they would have to create a merc unit for it.
People will find ways to work together, wether there are tools in game for it or not. But knowing that people will make groups, it would be prudent to make some tools available in the house units so that they can do it.

What will be the advantages of joining a faction? Ive seen a lot of posts about players wanting to be mercs , and ive seen some stuff about lonewolfs, it just seems to me that being part of a faction should have some advantages also.
The one that sticks out to me is the loyalties some players have developed from playing other Mechwarrior games, But other than that it would seem that being a Merc would offer more opportunities ,freedom ,ect ect.
No Alcohol in the coffee! Always sober.

The way I see it, you would make a choice at character creation-
You choose out of the houses, with another faction option: lone wolf.
If you are a house guy, you eventually join a house unit, and you fight in pick up battles for your faction to gain lp and boost your factions fortunes.
If you are a lone wolf, you eventually join a merc unit, and you fight in scheduled battles to seize a planet for you and your merc unit buddies.
Faction guys would be able to spend their lp on faction specific modules, weapons, mechs, skins, perks, etc.
Merc Corp Guys would get special gear/etc depending on planets held by their merc corp.
