Custom player content always leads to one thing....

...penises

No to custom textures

If there is an ability to turn them off and its off by default, why even bother? No one will turn them on, since many people will add stupid and/or offensive crap on their mechs, or they'll paint their mechs with certain color schemes to make them harder to spot on certain maps. I'll personally have it turned off and kept off.....but I guess the devs can add it for people that really, really, really want it....

This kind of negative attitude of "Let's not do this because this will happen" is the reason why we don't have nice or new things and stuck with what's already been done or "safe".

Yes, it's going to eventually happen like that but a LOT of people want it for more then something childish or retarded as that. Some of us really want to be able to customize something as simple as the paint and decals. =/

Im all for trying new things, if they have a sound premise. But really? custom textures a "new thing"? Its been done to death, and its been shown to be abused by players or used to troll/grief. The only way to make it "work" is to make it next to pointless ... IMO (feel free to disagree). but you know thats the sad truth...sorry if it sounds negative.

I'm not a fan of the "Black Sheep" punishment rule, where the actions of a chosen amount of miscreants means that those who were using them for how they were intended are punished.

Not that I'm not arguing it as not being the truth, cause it is; it's just sad that people act in such a way because they can cower behind the anonymity of the Internet.

There's a drive in many people who want to showcase their individuality, and little says that more than a skin they customized themselves (which is probably why cosmetic customizations sell so well in F2P markets)

Thing is, the more in depth in customizations you allow, you move the community closer to breaking the visual aesthetics because people are choosing hot pink horns on their Atlases or the like. They get a bad case of peacock fever, if you ask me.

This would open a big can of worms for the devs. They would have to review every single texture to make sure there was nothing offensive with it. I don't think they want to hire a full time staff just for this type of feature. Then they have to somehow send this texture in some sort of a patch because trying to download all these custom paint jobs at the start of the match is not a valid option. I don't want to wait 20 minutes for someone to download these, unless there was a way to download them during the actual match and the default was used initially.

They could let us buy the paints and amount of paint. then give us some sort of customization window. where we could work on our mechs and paint them with decals and what not. I'm thinking of something like APB reloaded's character and car customize window.

Instead of making a new thread I thought I would rez this thread.

My thoughts on the matter is it's good to have colors you can chose from to pick your warpaint on your mech. Decals on the other hand can be a bit of a double edged sword especially if it's a cash shop item. Some will have awesome tasteful decals, but many might try to sneak naughty things through. The better idea is to have only a few decals available with a ton more that you can unlock with just a few bucks from the cash shop. This way if people really like some of the cooler decals they will shell out some money for it. Personally I'd love some of those oldschool plane decals on my mech.

yeah would be nice, and then PGI could also cash shop the customize paint job like APB Reloaded did.

I tried APB Reloaded in Beta, looked at character and car shop, and gave up in disgust with the lack of free2play options to looks customization. In Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield Play4Free, they sell looks customization mostly and have very little free changes. In Other MMOs you can RL cash buy clothes and looks for your avatars. I usually leave my avatars looking nondescript if there are no options for free changes. Other MMOs like City of Heroes and Champions Online you have a great deal of free choices for avatar looks.

I too will bump this thread to add my 2 cents. How about instead of having custom textures for each individual, each House unit and merc corps creates a set of textures for their unit? PGI could release the resources for us to make our own pro-quality textures (ambient occlusion, normal, and uv maps, etc. along with 3d models that can actually be imported into 3d modeling program) One or more members of each unit could make textures for the mechs and the unit as a whole would vote on them and submit them to PGI for approval. That last part would weed out any of the more... interesting designs that might come up. It would essentially function like clan tags but much, much cooler.
