Technically a fusion reactor cannot reach critical state. There was extended optional rules in TT which allowed this to happen, but they clearly stated that the fusion reactor has mechanism build on them which prevents the core explosion. And even if the core breach happens, it would look like a large jet of plasma.
Personnaly, I would not want any kind of fusion reactor explosions to MWO, ammunation crits and stuff like that are fine. Funny, that the massive ball of exploding plasma is more "anime" and unrealistic than hands on mechs, yet the people want such silly things.
And please, don't take this personally, I'm just ranting and expressing my own opinion.

makes me wonder if you could take a scout mech drop all the armor replace it with missles and just run up next to a big mech and let him kill you, you go boom, missles go boom, he go boom! course not sure if an ammo explosion will effect anything other than your mech.
I smell mekwreck...

This. If every mech would go critical everytime, it would become boring soon. Like a bad action movie, were you just yawn at just another explosion.
Yea, I agree I think they should have it so that when they die they have a small chance to expolde.

Ugh, I really really hope they don't have every mech's reactor have a catastrophic containment failure. There should be a CHANCE of it. To take tabletop as an example (omg, don't get bent out of shape for me doing this guys, I know, evil tabletop!), you have to recieve 4 engine criticals in one round for a CHANCE of containment failure. Then, you have to roll a 10 or higher on 2d6 for it to actually happen. Makes it a VERY memorable experience when it does. And quite deadly.
The core also goes off (automatically) if you destroy all the internal slots in the center torso in a single round (thats from FULL to empty in one round)

...4 engine criticals? What the hell kind of tabletop are you playing? Nothing like this exists in Total Warfare, and I'm not sure about the more advanced rulebooks either.

TacOps is, I believe, where it comes from.
