No idea how this works internationally, but there are very few legal reasons that I know of (not an online game tax lawyer though, I admit) this wouldn't work in the U.S (although trying to write it off for the corp taxes is a nightmare of absurd propotions).

non cash prizes of 'indeterminable worth' works quite well for this (and the 1099G you'd otherwise have to fill out).

and it's not about making $ (not directly) it's about marketing, which is long term growth (by accumulating more players).

I'm totally ok with this, for a few reasons
1. Its optional pay
2. Sounds like MASSIVE FUN
3. Real prizes sound kinda cool (Mw:o T-Shirts, with winner Shirts and stuff)
4. Makes me feel good if a part of it is going to some kinda Charity or something (*Shrugs* this is like low on the list but makes me feel.)

Meh to that. I want to be able to take a sub-50-tonner into one of these matches. I don't want to be stuck with the mobile-in-theory 100 ton turrets.

Assuming the prices aren't real cast or RMT types then it should be fine. It can avoid some potential legal implication.

Maybe an exclusive ingame shiny (special coat of paint on your ride of choice, a pair of nice glowing dice that you can hang in your cockpit, a deck of cards) or even a free MWO game card with some cash points that you can spend in MWO. A t-shirt or a mousepad (although shipping might be an issue in some regions :l) etc

Minor stuff like these. Bear in mind Piranha is running a tight shop, MWO can make or break it....

The best part about all of this, is since the game to us isn't real yet, we're completely unbound. We can dream big.

there dosent need to be any kind of charity involved
why cant we just have a Solaris PRO circuit ?
every other game can (those that want it anyway), they are not slammed by legal issues

the current league of legends tournament pool is 5 million dollars
that's $5,000,000
its even organized by RIOT (the devs of the game) and you gain access simply by playing the game

there is no reason that PGI couldn't do the same thing (clearly not on launch but at some point)
we can have a Pro Solaris Circuit
and by golly it would be awesome
spectators (in game and streamed / televised)
prizes -cash, physical items (shirts, trophies ect), in game items (custom skin like the heros from BT lore)
pilot name and records entered into Solaris halls of Fame
entry to pro circuit could be restricted to top % of Ranked Solaris players (league does this, starcraft does not)

no common i am super serious here
think about it , we could even have REAL LIFE Duncan Fisher's (reads esport commentators) [George Ledoux may even be interested]
it would generate so much for our game, not just $ wise but interest, additional community and a steady stream of new players
check out Day9 (a starcraft2 commentator) if you have never seen him before, or head over to gomtv and let Tasteless and Artosis cast a match for you

mech warrior could have the same vibrant competitive life
the OP's idea was for a massive community event i think and its a good idea
but i really think a true Pro league for MWO needs to be talked about

I agree... a Pro league definitely is somewhere down the road. It doesn't even have to be restricted to Solaris arena fights and could have 1v1, 4v4, and 12v12 ladders. However, a Pro league doesn't mean we can't have a community event for charity. Actually, such an event should generate enough publicity to make establishing a Pro league easier.

i love the idea! but like a previous post i dont wanna be stuck in some 100ton turret, so perhaps we could have several divisons? 1 for each weight class and your only alowed to register in 1.

I'm totally not a fan of THAT, First off its restricting access to a semi public event, it cuts off revenue and makes it a little more of a "By Invite Only" kind of thing.

Then again I'm thinking of it as a "Come here, use our machines, Bring you're own flight stick (optional)" cuts down on people who might wana try to use trainers or something, makes it feel more like an actual competition makes ya fight harder and think smarter.

As for leagues, i would say ya only need two leagues, stupid walking turret contest, and Lance Matches. If you cut it down to 1v1 what are scouts going to really do, the main thing that makes this game LOOK interesting is full lances with everyone manning a position. If you're main thing is running and bringing the fight to them, good for you, theres a class for that, if you like information warfare and run out on scouting missions, theres a class for that to.

This is all speculation of course but I would be disappointed if they only made it "top 10% ONLY" cause I'm always a middle of the roader (Mainly cause I don't normally play anything for days on end for 16 hrs a day, work and friends see to it that I cant) SO, I personally would like to see it open to all (Even the Nubs, although you would be crazy to recruit a nub to work with you're lance) but from a revenue standpoint its better then invite only.

Gaining entry could be free (or invite as mentioned previously), or it could be a purchased for real dosh "Ticket" off the store for entry. they could simply give it all to charity and write it off or send half or none to charity.

That will solve the "how do i get in" problems.

as for prizes. pyshical prizes would be limited to america and such. shipping international would be out i would assume. so prizes would have to be digital.

but still im up for it.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe the prizes could be digital items bought from MWO's online store.

I hope the Solaris matches have some sort of "spectator mode" so that people can watch the matches (and possibly bet c-bills?). I'd happily participate myself but I'd also like to see some vids (preferably shot from a neutral perspective) complete with commentary. I doubt that will happen but boy would it make me happy.

You just blew my mind. If we had something like that I don't think I'd play any other game ever again.

Thats a pretty good idea, the one thing i wounder if they do that is how will they get the odds? I suppose from both sides W/L Ratio? I suppose if its 1V1 A KDR comparison would do? Not sure but id be in for that one as well.

Good point. It also occoured to me that allowing people to bet C-Bills on matches might be a problem. I suppose they could bet amongst themselves but having a programmed game function for it could possibly be exploitable, especially if there is no maximum bet.

Have to remember in the US if they paid in real dollars then it could constitute gambling (Depending on state) and would be forbidden.. got to love antigaming rules in the US. (OR make that no you don't)

Not to rain on your parade, but I suspect that there are legal ramifications {and potential liabilities} that should be considered before endeavoring upon such an adventure.

It's a nice touch, but .... I'd think it would have to be a side bet at best, and I'd be surprised if THE GODS didn't quash it.
=H=

Its the safe bet. Guild Wars, however in like 2007 DID do $120,000 in prizes for the end of the year tourney back when Asians (non farming bots) still played it. Of course, korean industry sponsored it and a korean team won it. We talking bionic like reflexes and 0 time of thought reactions. Deep fried pwnage.
