All mechs and weapons will be equally available to all players.

So are you part of the dev team? Cause you sound really sure about your answer, almost as if you were stating it as a fact. Unless you are a dev, you can't make their decisions for them. Just because you say it'll be that way doesn't mean it will. Also, I hope there are specific mechs that are cheaper/more expensive depending on your house. This would create some pros and cons to joining each house.

That all players will (generally) have access to all items was stated to be the case by Bryan Ekman (Creative Director – Head of Design and Vision) in the second Dev Q&A:

Do factions have access to unique mechs or weapons? -cobrafive
[BRYAN] No. Prices may vary, but everyone has equal access to items.

So, I would think Dirk's certainty in his answer is fairly justified.

That being said, I would imagine that there might be some restrictions on what is available, and when - it seems unlikely that Clan-built OmniMechs will be flooding the marketplace anytime soon, for example.

Moreover, there were non-House factions that had 'Mechs unique to them - the Star League era super-stealth Spectors fielded by McCarron's Armored Cavalry (mentioned to exist in MWO-s in-game universe in the 11/04/2012 ISN post), the Annihilators and Imps of the Wolf's Dragoons (the former, while initially designed at the end of the original Star League, never went into mass production in the IS until after the Word of Blake Jihad, and the latter was a Clan-original design), and 'Mechs that are/were, wither completely or for all intents and purposes, unique to the Com Guards (such as the Excalibur, the super-stealth version of the Exterminator, and the Shootist).
I would imagine (and hope) that such 'Mechs would be exceedingly rare (and available only through salvage), if they are available to players at all...

Technically having to purchase a 'Mech with real money vs C-bills means its available to all players.

I expect the rare 'Mechs will be cash shop purchases, though I hope there will be a salvage function the game as well. Winners get weapons and new 'Mechs based on how much damage they did and kills they got, or something like that. 'Mechs wouldn't be complete ready to battle, maybe missing weapons or needing repairs. Then there could be a chance to win a rare cash shope 'Mech through battlefield exploits.

I know a game has to make cash some how.
I for one hope that rare mechs are left rare in game and not bought.

If people wanna short cut to playing the game it's one of those things I don't like but have to accept in todays gaming.

However if they make rare stuff avaliable for cash it will be the same as pay-2-win..

You should not be able to buy your way to the top.
Say X Y Z has a 0.0001% drop rate or something.. oh it's rare, it's in game, but it will effectively only be obtainable via cash, that ain't cool.

Ideally pay items would be gear that is buyable in game via ingame c-bills so that luck is not part obtaining it.

I doubt there they will make the Annihilator anytime soon. It is too rare a mech. There are only a handful and limited to one mercenary unit....who are actually clanners in disguise.

Brings up a good question though. How will MWO handle rare mechs like the annihilator (if at all)?

Since no mech can be truly destroyed in MWO (they can all be repaired again to 100%), if there is a way to get annihilator eventually EVERYONE can get an annihilator sitting in there mech bay...which kinda breaks down the 'true-to-timeline' immersion the devs are going for. Maybe mechs labeled as "rare" take much longer to get repaired, since extra part are hard to come by.

Lets just say for now forget about the annihilator.

*Thinks back*
MW4 MekPak Annihilator: Meh, nothing too special. Doesn't help that using it in multiplayer was pretty much a death sentence without heavy customization, since everyone else was boating ER PPCs and Gauss Rifles.
MW3 Annihilator: *Shudder* Near-instant death without a lot of luck... I'd get knocked down, and as soon as I got up I'd immediately get another faceful of ground.
MW2 Annihilator: Considering the fact that ACs of any type were pretty much game breakers in the MW2s, this thing was an absolute nightmare.

Personally, I would not use the Annihilator - it's just not my style. However, I'm okay with it being an option, eventually. - eventually. It should be fairly rare, though - maybe a high-level unlock, gained by putting a lot of time and effort into assault 'Mechs. Oh, and it should only be put in if it is either properly balanced to not be a game-breaker, or available only to people on my team :)

I don't expect many if any rare mechs to be out by launch or any time soon after. there are way to many more common and not so common mechs for them to be introducing at this time. I do believe if this game lasts we could see a whole lot of designs never used in games.

As to the idea of some mechs being purchasable i am okay with that idea. This game is f2p and they need to make money for the game to continue. I don't believe having some mechs being sold is going to turn this game into pay 2 win. Every mech has weakness that another mech type can exploit. Plus if you are worried about the purchased mech being over powered just make repairing it cost way more then a standard mech cause it is rare it should be harder and more expensive to repair.

Don't worry. In BT everything has HP and the Annihilator for all it's on paper DPS, still only mounts 12 tons of armor and moves at 30 klicks tops. Even if it is a cash shop mech, I don't see it being really viable due to slow speed.

Because of it's low speed and thin armor, it will become a prime target for TAG and commander called in air strikes.
