Almost every mention of Mechassault or Mechassault 2 I've seen on these forums has been negative. Why all the hate? Nevermind the fact that it "Wasn't MechWarrior", it was a fun, arcade-y shooter. More than that, it was my introduction to the other MechWarrior games - a gateway drug if you will. There's no need to hate it so much...

I enjoyed the MechAssault games myself, despite the wonky controls and lack of 'mech customization options. The storyline was excellent, as was the in-game dialogue.

From the very first mission: "Oh, well, feel free to mow the bloody infantry down." I heard that and I thought I'm gonna like this game.

I never played it. I never understood why they released it on a celeron with a geforce2 console, but not real PCs.

I think most of the hate stems simply from the fact that it wasn't a new MechWarrior game. People were so looking forward to more MechWarrior, and were therefore let all the more pissed when the game didn't fulfill that wish.

MechAssault was arcade twitch shooters, with spawning powerups and weak storyliners. Focus was on hitting that "fire" button, which was in a strong contrast to the Mechwarrior series.

A lot of people are purists when it comes to Battletech and Mechwarrior and find that MechAssault does not have a place on the palette that is Mechwarrior. There's a reason why it was released for the xbox and not the pc.

MechAssault was released about the same time as Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries in 2002, and seeing that Microsoft in the years afterwards chose to focus on the xbox market and basicly bury the mechwarrior franchise in favour of 2 more MechAssault releases in 2004 and 2006 was just dreadful.

Actually, I have no idea. I can only guess it's pure snobbery. I've been meaning to try it out myself.

Mechwarrior 3/4 and Mechassault 1/2 were some of my favourite games around that time.

I'm theorizing now.
Most BT fans I know love the Game because of its deapness and complexity.
Those of them who played the Mechwarrior titles from the start were mostly pleasently surprised the MW titles at least tryed to port this complexity to their Games.
Absolutely all MW/BT - Universe fans I know would simply hate it to see their beloved franchise reduced to some pow pow peww peww ofmg roflcopter ololol buttonmeshing game.
This is even worse than the neverending comparisions of MW to some first person or third person egoshooters like the half life spawns, teamfortress and so on. (btw the machinimas of TF are quite funny)
I think most of the 'hate' you feel vented by other BT fans towards Mechassault is inspired by fear for oversimplyfication of a BT-universe franchise on the one hand and by tender loving care for Mechwarrior on the other hand.

*complains about consoles and being arcadey*

*spells like a console jockey*

Oh irony.

Back on topic... Mechassault would have been fine if it wasn't part of the franchise. But the lack of customisation and lack of a simulator feel meant it wasn't much of a Mechwarrior game.

For me personally, I own them and have played them. They are what they are, fun arcade shooters. You will probably find that most people consider it to be an extremely dumbed down version of both the Mechwarrior and Battletech franchises, which took many liberties with them both and basically made stuff up. End bosses? Mechs with shields? Being able to hack into a mech and eject the pilot?

These are all so far outside of the well established universe that they may as well have introduced The Force, or aliens into the storyline.

Don't get me wrong, they're fun games and it is great that they have been a way to introduce people into the Battletech universe (which Mechwarrior is also a part of), but it also meant that new people coming into it had an expectation that mechs had shields and that these things were the norm.

It's not that I hated it, it just didn't have the real MechWarrior vibe by being to consoly/arcady for the time, it was fun but it lacked immersion, no cockpit view was the main reason for me, as a big MechWarrior fan I bought the xbox game to give it a try, played it for a while but ditched it after some time because I started missing the "Real" mechwarrior feel and went back playing Mechwarrior 4 and Mechcommander 2.

So in short , to me it was the lack of immersion.

I'll give you a comparison here:

BattleTech/MechWarrior = Lord of the Rings
Mechassault = Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Well, it's the same as why people hate C&C 4 so much, or newer Strongholds.

The games, as good as they are, are still part of the series and the people who buy them are the fans of the series and a few newcommers, but fans are the majority. What MW fans expected from MA was a console Mechwarrior, what they got for their money was something that didn't meet their slightest expectations. Thus all the hate.

MA and MA2 are two of my favorite console games to date. MA didnt offer the complexities that BT and MW may have, but the game was well designed and fun to play. The "clan/competitive gaming" aspect found in MA was great, and one of my favorite parts about it.
