Hiya everyone,

Before you go wild and argue which is the best one, please discuss only standard configurations of each mech type and consider the specific fields of application:

a.) scout/recon light mech

b.) scout/recon hunter light mech

c.) medium lance supplement light mech
------------------------------------------------------------------

d.) scout/recon medium mech

e.) light mech hunter medium mech

f.) artillery medium mech

g.) close combat medium mech

h.) heavy mech lance supplement medium mech

-------------------------------------------------------------------

i.) medium mech hunter heavy mech

j.) artillery heavy mech

k.) close combat heavy mech

l.) assault mech lance supplement heavy mech

------------------------------------------------------------------

m.) heavy mech hunter assault mech

n.) assault artillery mech

o.) close combat assault mech

It is not about your favourite mech (that you would like to pilot) but the most capable ones for each of the above mentioned categories based on their unique designs that comprise different factors such as communications and targeting equipments, armament, armour, speed, jump capability, cooling performance, etc. ...

... it is obvious that one battlemech model surely does not qualify as best in all all of these areas ;-).

Choose, but choose wisely :-) ...

and then knock yourselves out :-D ...

Why don't you have a scout hunter assault mech aka Charger?

Too many possible roles.

The best mechs of them all are clan mechs...like the kodiac...but we don't get to use them

Meh, there's no such thing as the "most capable 'Mech". It really boils down the skill of the individual pilot.

Yeah, I piloted the Chimera for 6 months straight to prove to my squad leader that it's the pilot not the mech. Then he stopped giving me guff about the Chimera and asked me to wingman for him. I said "Why would you need a wingman for a Black knight? I thought you said they are the best Mech of all? :P ;) ;) :D

FEK315...OUT!

Perhaps, there are too many options available but then you can pick the ones that are most interesting/important to you or that you would be most likely to choose when playing MWO.

@ Yeach: I did not include a scout hunter assault mech (such as the charger) as it does not make a lot of sense to me (waste of material in my opinion and most likely one of the most inefficient mechs there are).

@ Fluffinator: Possibly we will be able to use Clan mechs at some stage in the game, certainly not at the beginning .... but I think this is a good plan by the developers because otherwise that would be a lot less t olook forward to and I suppose at first the developers want to create a stable, balanced and diversifed gameplay before going high end and I think there are already enough other things to look forward, too, not just the initial choice of battlemech. Why don't you make a call for Inner Sphere mechs that you would consider as the first choice in your preferred fields of application?

@ Pursang & FEK315: That could be true within one type of application scenario (for instance, if a Cataphract and a Warhammer were engaging at mid range) but a Hunchback mech will hardly be a match for a Capatult mech at artillery range, the former will be toast before he reaches the latter no matter how good the Hunchback pilot will be and vice versa will the latter be toast when confronted with the former at close range ;-).

Urbans are ideally close combat mechs (of any weight class), aren't they?

@Ruu Tetsuhara- Oh you are so right :-) Boy did I learn that the hard way.
That being said I learned a lot of methods of attach and defense with inferior mechs which made my passion for the game even more intense. People have their misgivings about certain classes and this taught me how to exploit those misgivings.( Osiris, Flea, Chimera)
Example: 89% of people where so sure they could take out my Flea in 2 shots that they would forget about me and fight my larger wingman while I just ate away at their armor with my 4 MGS. (That was soooooo much fun!)

Most of the time I piloted the Chimera because few people had ever seen it in battle, this would dazzle my enemy into letting me get close with my MRMS or Tbolt. The good Pilots never fell for this and that hurt. :) :P

a.) scout/recon light mech - Raven. I don't like Capellans, generally, but this is one fine machine.

b.) scout/recon hunter light mech - Really like the original Valkyrie for this one.

c.) medium lance supplement light mech - Commando. Fast enough to recon and a solid ambusher.
------------------------------------------------------------------

d.) scout/recon medium mech - Hermes II. Quick enough, AC/5 and ML are enough for defense, sets things on fire while running away.

e.) light mech hunter medium mech - Assassin. Crazy quick, enough firepower to put a dedicated scout down hard.

f.) artillery medium mech - Dervish. Not the best long-range firepower, but it's also good up-close.

g.) close combat medium mech - Hatchetman. Obviously.

h.) heavy mech lance supplement medium mech - Enforcer. Mid-range, direct fire support while the Heavies get dirty.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

i.) medium mech hunter heavy mech - Quickdraw. Comparable speed to most mediums, more firepower, better armor.

j.) artillery heavy mech - Catapult. All lasers forward, has jump jets to get outta dodge if things go south.

k.) close combat heavy mech - Grasshopper. 75-tons, decent firepower, but incredibly mobile. Can't kill what you can't hit.

l.) assault mech lance supplement heavy mech - Warhammer. It basically IS an Assault 'Mech.

------------------------------------------------------------------

m.) heavy mech hunter assault mech - Zeus. Solid damage across all ranges.

n.) assault artillery mech - Stalker. Just because.

o.) close combat assault mech - Victor. AC/20 with jump jets. Ouch.

Which 'Mech type is the best of them all?
Whichever one I'm currently piloting.

Come now, some mechs are clearly more effective at some roles than others. You wouldn't use a 2/3 mover as a scout for example.

The Light/Medium/Heavy/Assault classes are getting blurred... which I really like. Instead of "Light Scout" would rather see "Scout, Quick", "Scout, Fast", "Scout, Defensive", etc.

Much like the Mech roles page on sarna.net tries to show; A role is independent from weight. Heck, one could even borrow boxing terms to show this. Ex. If Mechs weighed in for a boxing match;
  • Unlimited Assaultweight
  • Light Unlimited Assaultweight
  • Heavy Assaultweight
  • Assaultweight
  • Light Assaultweight
  • Heavyweight
  • Light Heavyweight
  • Cruiserweight
  • Light Cruiserweight
  • Heavy Middleweight
  • Middleweight
  • Light Middleweight
  • Heavy Welterweight
  • Welterweight
  • Light Welterweight
  • Lightweight
  • Bantamweight
Then toss in "scout", "recon", "ECM", "fire support", "skirmisher", "sniper", etc and seems to me saying a 55ton fills a role better than a similarly equipped 60ton Mech doesn't make as much sense.

scout/recon light mech - Ostscout or Raven are both good in this role, though I think the Ostscout is the better of the two

scout/recon hunter light mech - Tough call here, but I'm going to go with the Panther

medium lance supplement light mech - Commando; no jump jets, but good firepower to back up what the rest of the lance brings

scout/recon medium mech - Assassin; great mobility, weapon loadout gives it flexibility in engagement range

light mech hunter medium mech - toss-up between Phoenix Hawk and Vindicator; both have decent mobility and nice hole-punchers

artillery medium mech - hmmm, Trenchbucket or Whitworth

close combat medium mech - if they were planning on implementing melee attacks, the Hatchetman would win, um, axes down; as it is, I'd say the Kintaro (if it's in the game)

heavy mech lance supplement medium mech - Griffin; good mobility, nice hole puncher that doesn't need ammo; LRMs for indirect or direct fire

medium mech hunter heavy mech - Flashman, if it's in the game; also a Grasshopper

artillery heavy mech - evidently, my memory is faulty, since I thought the Catapult had more reloads than it does; so, I'll go with the Archer

close combat heavy mech - Grasshopper is a very good brawler

assault mech lance supplement heavy mech - hmmm, Thunderbolt or a Warhammer would work well

heavy mech hunter assault mech - Victor - it has the mobility and the weaponry to put a serious hurt on a heavy

assault artillery mech - Longbow is a decent choice, but I have a warm spot for the Stalker

close combat assault mech - Victor, again

... and the Charger CGR-1A1, possibly, but then again, will anyone seriously consider piloting one of these mechs for the purpose of just hunting light mechs with an assault mech?

I meant the other way around - lights working alone or in tandem to kill assaults. The Adder Prime is a 35-tonner mounting 2 Extended Range PPCs with a targeting computer for increased accuracy; it hits 97 KPH and carries as much torso armor as a 35-ton 'Mech can carry. The Solitaire is a 20-tonner with a max speed of 162 KPH and almost all of its maximum armor; it's armed with 1 Heavy Large laser, 2 Heavy Mediums, and a Heavy Small.
