So, a couple things to address.

1. How many people still play these games? MCG does work on Win7, I've been playing that one and going through the campaign. =3

2. What are your favorite mods for MC2? I'm using Omnitech for MC2, also starting to fiddle with MCX and MC2X (Wolfman's mod and Wolfman's stand alone source code modification respectively).

3. Anything else you can think of.

As a personal interest, does anyone have/know where to download copies of the extra MCG campaigns? There were 3 versions (total of 6 campaigns) that replaced the Original and Expansion campaigns, but all of the DL links I can find are filesonic hosted which stupidly stopped allowing filesharing.

This is the post on both forums I found with the no longer working DLs
Spoiler

It would be awesome to be able to play these, as I've played the original MCG campaigns 10+ times overs. ^^; I also like the way MCG plays much better over MC2.

Is there a way to play some sort of co-op style missions? I've never been good against real people in MC games.

I still play them from time to time.

I believe that Wolfman's MC2 mod had some co-op missions but i can't tell you for sure.

Cheers

I would play MC1...my uncle just last night told me how to get it to work...will have to try that...MC1 is epic +D

As for MC2...My favorite...well, idk about favoritie, but only mod i used was whatever mod It was taht added hundreds of mechs to the game. I ended up trying ot edit save games so I could lower the prices of thosem echs enough to use them in the campaign and even went so far as to edit my pilots and mechs I start with....for some reason it worked with the base game but not with that mod.

It had Kodiaks and Marauders, WarHawk....tons more mechs then the base game...it was cool. I just found it annoying the way they took all the pilots away...It was kinda cool lol. I still like MC 1 better...if I could only figure out how to edit save games there and start my team out withL

Vulture W
Loki A
Masakari A

Itd be perfect.

Awesome, so I found a site with all the different fan campaigns for MC Gold downloadable. Problem is now, because I'm running 64-bit I had to use the bypass method to play which is just dragging the entire contents of the CD into a folder on the comp to play. This means that I couldn't run the installer, which also means that it never created a registry key for the game...crap... I can't use the MSXtract program to get the DPK files to extract and use the custom campaigns.

Anyone know a way to setup a registry key for MCG?

That would be Mechcommander 2, and I already use the Omnitech mod. It's definitely a fun one to use, especially cause its compatible with all of the original MC2 files including videos. While Wolfman's MechCommander2X mod is awesome, it uses the open source release from microsoft that didn't include the video or multiplayer coding. Omnitech (while not quite as expansive as MC2X) is by far the best current mod option in my opinion, as it keep the video and multiplayer coding by modding the original MC2 itself and not the open source code.

As for my previous post, I'm still trying to figure out a way to create a registry key for MCG....anyone on 32bit windows have a working MCG key they'd be willing to share? I'm thinking if I can get an example (cause you can't install using 64bit windows) then I could modify the key to work with 64bit windows and at least give MCXtract something to point to.

I have all the copies of the 6 MCG campaigns from the omnitech forum, which has dead links now.

The only way I could play those campaigns though was to install xp in VM program and then install MCG. Or right now I have a second partition which has xp on it where I play those campaigns when I want.

Other than that, I haven't figured out any other way, and I've been at it since June 2011.

I actually have 8 MCG campaigns downloaded currently, 6 of which are from the download links that had them as 'pre-installed' campaigns on full versions of MCG already.

I'll probably have to use an XP VM and install MCG to get those campaigns into my game unfortunately...I can't think of any other way to get a working registry key to use MCXtract otherwise. On the plus side, I can back up the main install folder, and then just use the program to insert the campaigns and then copy them out into different folders as the registry key isn't required to play the game, just use MCXtract.

I'll try this with Win7's XP Mode download...

Done a campaign in MechCommander 2 for god knows what time just a couple months back.
Used to make my own missions in editor, but not that much time for it anymore.
Anyhow... great game, one of those you name if smb asks 'what would you take with you if you'll have to stay on an uninhibited island for a few years'.

How about a list of campaigns names, so I can check them against my list to see which ones I have and what's missing.

I created a campaign back in the day, but I saved it on a floppy disk, which has since bit the dust.

"Floppy disc?" I know not of which you speak. :P Actually, I used to have an 8" floppy, just so I could loan it to the people who had the 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" disks. :) Ah, those were the days. I could go on about the "single sided" and "double sided" disks, back when IBM used to top side, and the Apple ][ used the bottom side.

Try copying all the files on the CD over to a folder on your hard drive. Then use the MC .exe file to play. Thats what I did to get it working on win7 64.

Yea, for the MechCommander (or Gold) game you need to open up the disc and view the files, then just copy all the files on the disc into a folder. My suggestion would be to (if you're running 64-bit windows) put in into Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/MechCommanderGold and just dump all the files in there.

I don't know what the original game's .exe name was, but if you're having issues running it still, right click the exe file used to run the game (MCX.EXE for Gold) and go into properties->Compatibility. Check both the 'Run this program as an administrator' box towards the bottom, and the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' at the top with 'Windows 98 / Windows ME' chosen from the drop box.

Hopefully that sorts out your original mechcommander problems.

I'm still unable to create a registry key for mechcommander because I only own the 64 bit version of both 7 and XP, so I can't even emulate XP to install it. The MCG installer itself doesn't work with 64 bit systems. So unfortunately, I still don't have a way to install the fan campaigns... :D

Having the same problem, really want to get my hands on those pre-installed campaigns.

Also, incase anyone did'nt know, there is a simple hack to get higher screen resolution in MCG (1280x1024 I think it is).
Locate your prefs.cfg (it's in the same folder as the MCX.exe), open it and add "l Resolution=3" without the quotes before "FITend" at the bottom.
Often when I exit the game it overwrites the changed file, so I keep one handy and copy it to the game dir everytime I start the game..

I still have my MC1, MCG and MC2 CDs.

But Windows Vista seems to not get along well with MC2. It installs, but not without some serious errors, most of which prevent me from playing the game enjoyably. However the game will randomly decide to start working, and I beat MC2 recently.

I played MC2 on the zone for years, probably still one of my favorite RTS games.

The only way to make MCG work properly on Vista\W7 (especially 64-bit versions) - is to mount and run "virtual PC", which, for this who not familiar, creates a complete virtual PC in you systen, runnin on WIn XP (just google "windows 7 virtual pc").
Altrough im not done this, but i think importing registr (i think thats a right term - not familiar with EN Win) from your virtual PC Win XP can help to solve problem with keys and likes, ofcouse if you manage to make MCG run under your main OS...

Sadly, but MC2 not that easy to run under modern 64-bit OS... :)

Allright. I found a link that still works for a few MC Gold Campaigns. Didn't try the files yet... Modified in 1999. Should be it.
