Any weapons system gets thoroughly tested before it gets deployed. How about a 'Proving Ground' map. A single player area to test out a mech configuration. Worst thing for a mechwarrior is to go into battle only to realize he doesn't have enough heat sinks for more that one salvo. Or that while he equipped an AMS unit. He forgot the ammo...........

Not like that ever has happened to me mind you......

I'm just sayin.....

Agreed, would be really interesting if the map had various climate too. The extreme heat on one end, cold on the other, with middle ground of average temperature.

in fact, it would have helped me figuring out the control, weapon groups, etc....

i felt quite bad landing on the field and not knowing how to use my mech's features....
a proving ground could be worth as much as tutorial and remove some of the helplessness i, and maybe some others had in the beginning

it should also allow to test mechs or setups one hasn't even bought yet, to see if they're cool

This idea can incorporate a lance or larger as well.
Let's say you want to try a variant of your mech so you ask a lance mate to 'sim' with you: so that there is no ammo used or damage done.
Woah (Keannu Reeves voice), that worked! Let's get the lance and see how we can use this to fight another lance!
MUHAHA! It still worked...let's get our company to 'sim' against another of our companies to see how it works!

This is a great idea.... gives us the ability to perfect our mods... maybe even include a lowpower version of the core variant you are using as a NPC target also. Just going around and shooting up trees is no fun.

great idea, i know i felt horrible the first time i launched into a battle and spent most of my time trying to get used to the controls and was very little help in the battle, a place to practice would be awesome.

[Interviewer]: MechWarrior Online is based heavily on teamwork. Is there any plan to include a training area where player units will be able to practice their teamwork, gunnery and skills without having to deal with a live enemy? Maybe even a possibility to create mock battles with training weapons between the members of the same unit divided in two teams, or between two friendly units?

[Russ Bullock]: I think all things are possible post launch if we have a successful product on our hands. The only thing planned for launch or just after is a tutorial level where we can teach players that are new to the MechWarrior universe how to pilot the unique controls of a Battlemech.

I know right? I felt like an ***** in my first match, not even knowing how to configure weapon groupings for my first six or seven games!

Oh course I'd love to see an eventual training mode in the future, but at very least they could add some kind of text to help you with queries like this.
