BTT:
The Highlander variant we would have to settle with would be the HGN-733, featuring an AC-10 as replacement to the gauss rifle. It still is a powerfull weapon, but lacks a little in range.
If we have to consider an equal share of 'Mech designs for each of the Great Houses, we have to expect more than 12 'Mechs... 20 is more likely. To be honest, I didn't check my list in terms of by which House the designs are fielded most.

Light
Looking at their choices so far I don't think that the Raven will be in as with it's electronics it is too good. For preference I would go for the Wolfhound but it may be excluded as it has no ammo based weapons. I think that it is likely to be the Valkyrie as it is an iconic balanced mech.
Medium
I think that the Wolverine is the logical choice. There may well be more than 3 mechs in this category. Other considerations are the Trebuchet or Dervish.
Heavy
Cataphract and Orion. Both well balanced and not unseen.
Assault
Stalker - allround balanced mech at all ranges. Backed up by either the Cyclops or Battlemaster for command mechs. Possibility of the Awesome if they decide they don't want a command mech.

I mean... where is the problem today?
The japanese design from the 80`s has nothing in common with the new designs from today...
The tin miniatures were 1:1 copys from Macross etc... also the pictures in and on the early BT Books... but if I see those brilliant re-designds here made by the developers of MW:O I am sure they can prensent us gorgeous new designs for our beloved good old IS Mechs...
It won`t be Battletech without Marauder, Warhammer, Archer, Battlemaster, Rifleman etc... for me these are the best Mechs ever... just loved them at the first sight many many years ago till now.
Im with Phelan Adam Davion on this one.
Let Macross and Harmony Gold keep their designs. Im sure the MWO design team can come up with something much better with the same feel anyway.
As far as mechs I think we will be seeing...
Urban mech - light
Trebuchet - medium
Black Knight - Heavy
Daboku AKA Mauler... Doesn't Debacle seem kinda similar he he he Great work DCMS

Commando
Firestarter
Raven
Hollander2
Hunchback
Centurion
Catapult
Jagermech
Awesome
Atlas
as the InnersphereMechs; 5 / 10 of Mechcommander Mechs are in MWO
So based on Mechcommander mechs, the missing mechs are the:
Raven
Firestarter
Jagermech
Awesome
(I am excluding the Hollander2 because its a new mech in 3057)
plus the Jenner and Dragon thats 11 mechs
I'll throw in
Zeus (assault) as the last assault mech.

Consider it a mixed blessing; since we won't get to touch Clan 'Mechs for quite some time, you may just be graced with a good old Marauder, maybe just a Succession Wars technology refit, but still better than nothing.
The developers have been giving some attention to some battlemechs which haven't been seen in MechWarrior for decades, if at all...
...At this point, I wouldn't be too surprised to see a Pheonix Hawk or Wasp.

For the last Heavy, GO WARHAMMER.
Medium, don't care much.
Light, don't care much either, but the Raven would be a cool edition. Either that or the Wolfhound, seemed to be a LIGHT 'Mech with a PPC back in MW4 Mercs.

hummm lets see for light i would bet on raven since i havn't seen a mech better suited for info warfare than it with the exception of the oscout.
med: i would lay odds on the trebuchet which would give med its fire support mech
heavy: i'd kill for the warhammer or maraurder but i'll have to go with the orion since its such a good all around machine
assault: one machine is left out of everyones list and its a good command machine as well (Banshee) which i would say has a vary good chance of getting in and as for the other mech i would say stalker for a good assault FS machine

The Unseen is a term used for some of the first BattleMech designs from the original game. These designs, longtime favorites of BattleTech fans, were based on mecha found in the Japanese anime series' Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Fang of the Sun Dougram and Crusher Joe.
Legal difficulties prohibited FASA from displaying any more pictures depicting these 'Mechs, although they were often freely mentioned in novels and books, and their rules remained legal. Thus, these 'Mechs remained unseen until the publication of Technical Readout: Project Phoenix, which presented "redesigns", allowing them to be used freely once again.
On 24 June, 2009, it was announced that Catalyst Game Labs had secured the permissions needed to utilize the original "unseen" artwork for these designs again.
Shortly after the return of the "unseen" BattleMechs was announced, the BattleTech: 25 Years of Art & Fiction PDF was pulled from circulation. Managing editor Randall Bills made a statement on Catalyst Game Labs' website on August 10th, 2009 explaining the move. An error was made in negotiating the distribution rights for some of the images. Twelve Unseen images, those originating from Macross, were again pulled from circulation and will remain unseen, due to their exclusive distribution rights (within the United States) belonging to another company (Harmony Gold). Whether or not these images will be licensed or purchased in the future remains to be seen. The tone of the article was doubtful.[1]
So keep dreaming about your Warhammer or Rilfeman or Marauder. Harmony Gold has been bent about this for fifteen years and feel they are owed a TON of money from, Catalyst, FASA, Wizkids, and Microsoft.... Microsoft of the core of the problem here, because unlike the other listed companies, they have money, and HG thinks they can get something from Microsoft.
The Unseen will not be in any Battletech game until that issue is resolved, not matter who is making it, and it took close to 15 years just for project phoenix.
As for Lights, if they are only doing 12 launch mechs, then based off the time history, and importance ofe events I'm going to say it has to be the Wolfhound would be the last of the Light mechs, sorry Raven fans Raven was number 2 on my list, but based off the place in history of the Battletech lore, if there is only room for one more light mech, it is going to be the Wolfhound over the Raven.
Medium, it has been stated there will be NO melee combat at launch, so the Hatchetman is out. I'm going to go with the Blackjack here, a versatile mech, that was 100% FASA designed.
Heavy, Someone forgot the Victor was only a 80 ton mech, making it a heavy, and was also commissioned by Hance Davion, named after his son, and was what victor piloted before the clan invasion, historic mechs will trump wet dreams.
For Assault, I will guess the Awesome and the Mauler, both deeply rooted Classic Battletech designs with no links to the unseen.

Having this photo will make the polls on MWO more realistic.
Insert Mission Impossible theme.....
"If you choose to accept this mission...."

To keep it short, redesigning the Marauder and Warhammer to be different enough that they are unique in the eyes of any would-be legal warriors is not something that's permanently out of sight. They may not make it in the launch, but changing the Warhammer a bit whilst still keeping the overall feel of the original is certainly feasible
This Marauder looks incredible, though I'm sure the die-hard oldschool 90's BT fans hate it because they liked their Macross Mech. http://www.sarna.net...5r_marauder.png It certainly looks better than the original to me. By far. That particular variant even has the original "hands".
By the way, 80 tons is Assault =\. The Awesome is 80 tons right with the Victor
Edit - Side note, the Raven is THE scout and electronic warfare mech, and it still packs a punch. I wouldn't count it out at all.

Light: Locust (super common), Raven (dedicated scout/electronic warfare platform), or Urbanmech (just because)
Medium: Hatchetman (hey, maybe melee combat will somehow make it into the game eventually), Vindicator (all around workhorse), or Dervish (medium fire support platform, poor mans Archer/Catapult)
Heavy: Orion (it's a common and classic heavy design), Jagermech (it's essentially a Rifleman in a different package)
Assault: Awesome (PPC boat), Zeus (long range fire support), and Battlemaster (all around assault performance)
The Cyclops would also be a good choice for an assault mech because it's known as a command platform.
