An idea for Mech Cosmetics

I was just looking at the three different flamer designs and all the different atlas body/head designs and had an idea.

WHAT IF:

Instead of the Devs staring at a list of different cosmetic mech designs for certain details such as the Atlas Heads or the flame thrower designs and trying to decide which one of those designs should make it into the game and which ones to toss, what if the Devs had it to where it is optional to purchase with either ingame money or RL money different cosmetic designs?

For example, if you guys have 12 different design ideas for an Atlas head, choose which one will be a default head, and sell the other designs to MWO players.

Would this work? Is it a bad idea? I'm not sure how the mechanics work since the only FTP game i ever played was Perfect World, lol.

As far as geometry goes, I don't think this is a bad idea so long as you don't end up with smaller pieces, else everyone will try and minimize their target profile. I would support each piece being blank and able to also be colored, so atlas head 1 should actually have a different shape then atlas head 2, rather then just being textured to look different.

Presents an issue with devs time and development of deploying a working/profitable game first..

Meh, towards the end of the production cycle, the art is all done and the artists got nothing to do. This could be a good use of their time. As long as the basic size and shape is consistent among them all, why not sell vanity items to make pilots visually distinguishable as long as the "hit geometry" doesn't shrink or worse.. grow. I'd rather them get cracking on the next phase: non mech vehicles and elementals/battle armor. These battles we are gearing up for involve swarms of infantry and vehicles. Pilotable Aerospace! C'mon, you know you wanna!

Its not a bad idea by any means but you have to remember. if i could buy say a new atlas head with real money which would be equal to a in game money amount. This would cause a lot of Chinese farming characters to start playing this game. it would mess up the market if there is an open market. however i don't know enough about the economy of this game to make the best judgement. but thats just my two cents, hope it helps.

Chinese...farmers? It's the Irish you have to watch out for! I don't think there will be an open market, so nothing for "Cbill sellers" to farm. Besides, its looking more and more like i can directly purchase Cbills from PGI...

From YOUR perspective. Perhaps the art department is ahead of schedule, then no it isnt an issue. This comes up in most big games "why are you working on *shiney thing* when you can make new features" to which the answer is "We are more than one person and, the people who make shiney are not doing anything".

Guys seriously?

This is a F2P game. A game built from the ground up as a F2P game. They'd be stupid if they weren't ALREADY doing this kind of stuff.

F2P games are all about cosmetic crap for players to buy. Im sure they already have multiple Atlas heads lined up for you to buy. The concept art with all the atlas heads was meant to show you this. It doubt it was preliminary art the devs used to choose the main head. Remember that FD draws those black and white sketches AFTER they've nailed down the main concept art. In other words its meant to show the variety the mech can have...and its basically the concept art for the vanity customization.
