No warrior is ever put into battle without training and I would very much like to see a training ground so a player can hone and sharpen their skills.
Choices could be.....
1) Pick your mech and available load out.
You need to know how to make the most out of the mech you will be using. While I like to set a specific loadout to the mech type I don't agree that allowing ANY loadout you want is a good thing. Some frames need to stay static to their design and restrictions. IMO.
2) Active or static target.
A) Active (computer or human) gives you the chance to see how well you can dodge and shoot while monitoring heat and damage. While playing MPBT friends and I would take missions against each other. He would take a shot at me with a spicific weapon upon a specific spot and we would discuss the damage and results. Then I would do the same to him. In this way we built up intel on how best to defeat our enemies.
A resutling match with my friend and I against 2 other players had them both black and us only yellow within a few minutes. The screen shot I got was priceless because the comment from one of the guys we took on was, "Wow, I must have taken a crit!". On my screen, his mech was total black. Nope, no crit, just 6 well placed shots.

3) Simulated damage.
I don't believe you should need to pay to repair a training mech. Consider the damage as being computer simulated only. If you actually had to pay for a refit nobody would ever be able to buy a mech. LOL.
4) All planet types.
Yep, weapons use and loads are totally different on ice vs. volcanic. You need to practice on each type.
Many of the newbies are just going to jump into a mech and jump into battle only to be killed and have their mechs destroyed. The smart warrior is going to know exactly how to pilot everything and anything they drive well before they take on the new mission. As the saying goes, fools rush in!!! For me, I wish to survive as well as profit from each encounter.
