I have a funny story for this suggestion.
My wife see me some time playing and wanted to know some details. I give her my whole wisdom of mechwarrior (played all official mech warriors titels including mech commander). She liked the idea of a big deathmaschine and wanted to try MWO. She never played a Tank game or somthing where u must control the lower half aaaaand the upper half. Sooo she pushed away the mouse and leave the seat. What i try to say is that we realy need some singleplayer test areal. I will install mw4 on my wifes pc to learn her how to control a mech but i think it shouldnt needed to install a older game to learn or test something. Nearly every game i see some mechs fire her weapons on start on wall or my mech .... only to test the heat ... and yea i test this the same way without hiting a mech. Some Test Camber/ Areal / Shootingrange / Simulation for testing some settings without wasting 4 mil by repairing a atlas because the setting sucks would be nice.

Training area please. To be honest, if I hadn't already paid I'd have dropped this game the first time I played it. I'm only sticking around now in hopes that they'll introduce a wading pool for us tadpoles to train up in or learn our rotation before we get dropped into the shark tank.

Definitely on board. VR, flat green plain, doesn't matter to me so long as I get to test out my configuration! Even better if they are faction-specific and thus allows us to get more into the backstory and the sim of it all.

To be honest, I'm surprised this wasn't implemented by the devs already. I don't doubt they thought of it, but perhaps they concluded we didn't want it. Let this thread stand as proof that we do, and it's worth adding.

This would be nice, especially since my main lancemates are new to Mechwarrior. Admitedly, I'm new as well, but I'm quicker to pick up on tactics than they are. We could all go and merrily blow things up in VR before actually dropping into a battle.

A training arena of sorts could be a very good idea. I've been playing BT/MW for a long time and one thing I accept as a given is that PPCs have a min/max range and knowing this means I don't gain heat firing wasteful close range PPC shots that do no damage, yet bring my mech closer to shutdown whilst in close quarters combat.

Unfortunately some folks, especially noobmeisters ;), don't know about such trivial technical details that make MWO Mechwarrior. Nor do they really care at times. What really concerns them is getting in there and blowing stuff up - a training arena with a few helpful tips and pointers would be a great start for them.

The alternative is a series of training videos that both rookies and vets could gain something from. :)

Your Mech Bay will allow you to see color scheme
Your Weapon stats will give you info about range of your weapons.

Accruately in Inner Sphere training around with mechs are uncommon.

Whether it's lore accurate or not is not going to matter to the person who is completely new to BattleTech and gets frustrated to the point of quitting because they have no idea why their 'Mech stops shooting and moving in the middle of a fight. Instead of losing potential new fans/players due to the learning curve, it'd be nice to have at least some provision for easing them into the game mechanics before throwing them to the wolves.
