You are certainly entitled to an opinion, and if this was a single player game I would agree with you. But as a team based game, jumping into any Assault class 'mech and not having any idea of how to pilot it or knowing the map you're on or anything else that helps your team is doing a great disservice to your fellow team members. They are counting on the Assaults to hold the line while they can do their jobs. If an Assault pilot is inexperienced or just to selfish to care, it turns a fun game into an unpleasant experience for everybody.

I agree with you though that grinding isn't fun. However some limited amount to let a new player become familiarized with the game would be fair and appropriate IMO.

WoT allows the brand new player to buy a teir 8 tank without a single second of grinding, hense my whole previous post. So if MWO did the same, they wouldn't be the first to do it. They would be the first to do it for free.

Maybe everyone just has to start in a Chameleon for the first 25-50 games as part of ”training" THEN they can choose whichever 'mech they want. I'd be OK with that as well.

Too me that would not be a bad idea!

I still believe that there should be a base "start-up" mech that cannot be sold or otherwise gotten rid of. This ensures that no one ever becomes dispossessed, lacking the money to field one operational mech.

At present I would opt for the vastly overpriced Raven (compared to the costs for the Dragon and Catapult mechs), but for recon and covert ops this mech would be perfect and, possibly, amortise after a while ...

I doubt that anyone will ever get dispossessed. The worst that may happen is that the player will not advance in the game as fast as others with regard to technology, money, and experience, but I am quite positive the programmers will ensure that one cannot fall behind what is available at MWO start-up (one mech in standard configuration with just enough money to keep it repaired). The initial C-bills would ensure the one mech of your choice, as promised by the developers, that will always be available.

It was simply a suggestion to ensure that no pilot gets stuck with no way to make money, therefore no way to advance or play.

Terrible idea, as I posted in the other thread, assuming repairs scale to size (more weapons to repair, more armor to buy, etc) then assaults would be doubly handicapped. They would be more expensive to buy and more expensive to repair, so lights and mediums would have a big advantage in the ability to initially customize.

Give people a choice of 4 mechs, make them run stock for a bit.Give them enough for repairs for 5-10 losses because we all will suck initially.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. I want to pilot an Assault so I can be a tank/brawler for my team but it doesn't make sense if I'm paying a huge amount of my C Bills just to unlock it and then I don't have enough for mods/upgrades (which isn't that big of a deal) but the kicker is my role is to be taking damage so my lighter lancemates aren't which means I'll have to spend more on repairs which are going to cost more in the first place because it's an assault mech. The way I want to play the game is basically being thrown out the window while the light/medium players get their mechs plus upgrades and less repair costs. Anybody else see the issue here?

I like the idea of starting off with limited c-bill's and a limited mech selection. This will allow everyone to train on easy missions (earn the right to pilot in a team/group) before getting blasted. Nothing like watching you back because your team mate can't pilot.

For completion's sake I added the Cataphract to the poll. However, it exceeds the predefined C-bills limit (10,000,000) determined at the beginning of this thread and, therefore, no C-bills would be left for additional mods/upgrades when choosing this option. I would imagine though that some people here would still pick this mech/challenge in spite of starting without extra C-bills.

Since I'm getting the Elite package, I get a free Catapult to start with anyway. So either I'll fully upgrade it to my 14 million C-bill "Talon" variant, or buy a Jenner and turn it into something sweet.

Do I think the system would be balanced? Hell no! I don't think we should be able to buy extras and modules for our 'Mechs right from the start.
Do I think we should be given a fixed amount of money to buy our first 'Mech? No! I'd prefer it, if we had to chose our role and favourite 'Mech class, complete a tutorial and get to chose from a selection of 'Mechs fitting the role and class. Of course, for this model we would need more than 12 'Mechs at launch.

Since I'm going to get the Elite pack I will have to start with one of the 'Mechs offered therein... and that would be the Catapult. I therefore changed my vote on this poll's first question. The statement quoted above holds true nonetheless. But guessing from the ign-video on the 'Mechlab featuring our beloved Paul, I would say we will start with a fixed amount of C-Bills to spend on 'Mechs and customization, if we like it or not.
