I would like a side step button. Some cases where lined up a simple side step would suffice. Not looking for a strafe. Like a one or two step left or right. Nothing that would dodge a bullet. I don't see why we couldn't do this. Not like asking for lean.
SIDE STEP!?

The mech joints don't support such kind of movement. They are hard fixed to the lower torso and their hydraulic system is made only for straight walking.

If you want to "strafe there is a way you can do it.
Turn your torso 90 degrees to your legs and walk back or forward and you get the same effect.
Thats the best you can get.
You have to remember that this is not an FPS shooter where you can move around like a person.

By BT rules/canon, only Quad 'Mechs are normally able to side-step. (Total Warfare, pg. 50)
Quote
LATERAL SHIFT (FOUR-LEGGED ’MECHS ONLY)
Four-legged ’Mechs may also move laterally, or sideways, without changing their facings. A quad ’Mech making a lateral shift moves into an adjacent hex that is not directly to its front or rear, while retaining its original facing.
A lateral shift costs 1 Movement Point in addition to the cost of moving into the target hex. A two-legged ’Mech can perform a similar action using facing changes for 1 MP more.

If you're "not looking for a strafe" (which would be accomplished by repeatedly triggering the side-step command) or looking for a "pseudo-lean" (side-step from behind cover, fire, side-step back to cover), why ask for a side-step that non-Quads cannot normally/canonically execute?
