i wish i could credit the poster but 1 of the best ideas i have seen was a guy saying he bought 1 great engine to switch between a few mechs, havent tried it but sounds great.
stuff in slots have hitpoints? so a mech with 1 laser in the arms adds 10hitpoints but a laser and 2 heatsinks would be 30 hitpoints added?should you fill as many slots as you can?if you have the tonnage would 6 single HS be 2x hitpoint as opposed to 3 doubles?
would 6 small lasers be more hp then 4 medium?might be good for beginners learning to hit (like me)
basic colors are buyable with cbills, and usable on more than 1 mech, so i painted my 3 cats for 2.5mil cbills just to customize my look a little b4 i go phranken.

Most of the users are switching engines, the XL are too expensive to buy more than one of the same class
Regarding the hitpoints, you misunderstood it. The hitpoints are relevant if there is damage done to the slot. If there isn't anything in this slot, the slot is destroyed, but you have no problem with this, because there isn't anything in it. If a laser does 5 damage and your weapon in this slot takes 10 hitpoints, it can be hit twice before being destroyed.
So the hitpoints are per internal slot, the overal hitpoints of a zone are given by your installed armor.

Most items/weapons have hitpoints, but they do not add hitpoints to the section they're in. Critical hits vs weapons/items is handled separately. A section with more weapons/items in it still takes the exact same amount of damage to destroy.
Using a single expensive engine for many mechs is a common practice, it's not a secret

Not quite. The internal hit points are given by Max Armor. To be specific they are equal to 1/2 of the max armor value for the component. E.g. if you have 60/100 armor in your CT, you still have 50 internal HP.
The head is an exception. it has 15 hit-points.

Ah ok more in detail.
There are 3 kinds of hitpoints
a ) armor
b ) weapon
c ) internal structure
a ) is set by the mechlab, if it is gone b ) and c) can be damaged
b ) is set by the type of weapon, if it is gone the weapon is damaged/gone and may explode in order to do addinional damage
c ) is set by max-armor / 2, if it is gone the complete area is gone including all b)s

That was me
The XL 280 works great across all heavies, can work for an Assault, and is fine in some mediums and lights. Is it perfect? No. But it is workable and allows you to instantly make a usable design out of a new mech while you earn more CB to make it perfect.
